Hello.
This one's dedicated to LegolaSS and the huge list of themes he's been sending, but also to poke you guys in the direction of an alien and awesome part of the animal kingdom.

This week fabtacular theme: RAINFOREST BUG!!!
Design a new creepy crawlie that belongs in a rain forest.

Wow, what a peasy topic.

THE RULING RULES OF RULEDOM
- Only one entry per user will go through to the vote thread.
- You cannot post your old work.
- No human likeness.
- No existing animals.
- No obvious combinations animals* (ie. no bees with wasps mashed together).
- A description for your creature is recommended, but not necessary.
- No MS Paint.
- All other Art Forum rules apply.

*Going to be a bit lax with this rule this week. But if it's WELL OBVIOUS ("that's just a recoloured mantis") your ass is grass.

If you have any ideas for a COW theme, either PM them to TurkeyOnAStick or leave a response on SirNightOwl's List of past COW Themes.

Good luck; have fun ;) winky face

ahh....
I was going to make an entry this week, but I really don't like the theme...
No offense to legolass (or anyone else for that matter), I really appreciate the effort you put in these cows, even though I haven't participated in any lately, I have been monitoring them closely.
The thing with this topic is that with bugs poeple's creatures tend to get more like reality (maybe since there are so many bugs), which kind of takes away from the whole idea of creating your own creature...

ah well, I might do one anyways.

A wild Stareopean Fathunker has appeared!

Early tribes believed the Starepean Fathunker brought good fortune and luck. It brought malaria.

(Trying hard not to back down like I normally do!) I think that because there's so many weird and wonderful bugs that I think it's very easy to find some inspiration, and go OTT. I think I've seen a conceptart COW where the winning entry was a dragonfly with a scalpal.

But like I said, the theme's ridiculously vague since I thought a little encouragement of trying something different would be good.

I hashed up a bland wasp thing to help support my thinking, but luckily Riot's done a much better job.

Just to add my two cents, I don't think borrowing aspects or features from preexisting creatures is a bad thing, if anything it makes your drawing more credible. Nature has certain rules and trends, it's why things look similar to others. By using various components from creatures and then exaggerating them and making them your own you make your drawing more credible and believable.

I'm not saying anything purely from your imagination is a bad thing at all, but even then you're still probably basing what you're drawing on associations you have of other animals or things.

I completely agree with ImpendingRiot. I want to be able to believe in your character. Great characters are those that are so fantastic that you know that they could never exist, yet so realistic that you believe they could.

Floral Battler

A battle seeking bug that's always on the move. Specially loves to smash ants. :D

This theme was sorta tough since there are so many types of bugs and it takes away a lot of wild imagination. Though good for a change.

By the way nice job with the theme pictures. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree. It's just that I once tried to draw an insect for another cow, with all kinds of freaky features, and after doing some research, it turned out that insects with those abilities already did exist. Since most poeple are more familliar with the "bigger" animals, it is easier to make your creature stand out.
Like if you draw a human with a double-sized nose... it would look funny. Whereas when you draw a elephant with a larger trunk, a lot of poeple won't notice it.

i saw this... and iv come back to look at it again... i love it to bits, its highly orginal... the colours look like they belong in the rainforest... the plants in the background have tiny details which just brings them up a touch, and loving the distance blur on the plants and other snail... looks like you took onboard comments about the whole creature this time :3... and oh my... doesnt it look wonderfull :3

Done.
The Columbian wormtail has to be the most vicious as well as cunning insect known to mankind. With it's wormlike tail it lures it's unsuspecting prey closer till they are in the range of his hind legs. It then stings it's prey with the small hook on its hind leg, which is covered in the poison from his glands (located between the 2nd and 3rd segment). This extraodinarily concentrated poison enables the Wormtail to kill even small birds.

the grim reaper

despite it's size and fearsome look it's actually a herbivore , it uses it's scythes to cut down tree's and his stinger actually injects the trees with a substance that makes them softer and digestible.
