With the new update here and ridiculously low chances of getting the new weapons, it's bound to have a topic made. So have any of you gotten any of the new weapons? So far I only got a Cloak n' Dagger.

And I hear valve made a mistake that hours of gameplay should already be giving you most of the new weapons... Wonder when it'll be fixed.

Same here.

Unfortunately, for some reason, my ping in every TF2 server is at least 590. I get popups that cancel the game, saying something about memory. Anyone know what's happening? Other online games I play work just fine.

Soon, you will be able to with other players. Also, they will make it to where you can "work towards getting the ones you want". I assume they have something in mind, such as trading 3 duplicate unlocks to earn one of your choice, or something.

I have got NOTHING. Yet.
I might as well leave TF2 idle for entire day seeing if it gives me something.

I hope you guys realize its exponential growth, so by next week, it should very easy to get weapons, it will start slow but will pick up very fast.

Ive gotten the razorback, atomic drink, sandman, and the force of nature ( by acheavements), I also have duplicates of Natasha, atomic drink, and the blusauger.

Is there any reason they switched from achievement based unlocks to this system which seems like pure chance?

To encourage more actual gameplay instead of achievement hunting.

To make it more friendly for new players.

To make it easier to catch people cheating to get the unlocks.

To allow them to build it into Steam Cloud.

To allow them to create a trading system around it.

To allow them to expand the items available in the future without having to make even more achievements.

Take your pick, really, all of those apply quite happily, especially when you look at the 30 achievements per class, that's 270 achievements to complete, the majority of them highly situational and unrelated to regular gameplay. Now, if they stayed with that system and wanted to add just ONE new item to each class, that's another 90 achievements to come up with, code, implement...it's a lot of work for a system that is fairly shoddy to begin with.

Imagine coming in as a new player after all the major updates are done, you're faced with a minimum of 270 achievements to complete in order to be competitive with the older players, and that's assuming that you're skilled enough at FPS games that there's no huge disadvantage for you there.

For every new item added it's another 10 achievements, or 90 achievements if they add items to every class, so you go from 270 to 360 to 450 to 540 to 630 to 720 to 810 to 900, and at that point you're finally up to 10 extra items per class, but the sheer amount of grinding in a way unrelated to regular gameplay required would kill the game.

So they change the system, and now instead of having to grind through hundreds of achievements just to get cool stuff all you have to do is sit down and play the game in a completely normal fashion, and the cool stuff comes to you over time.

It is, obviously, frustrating for the impatient children who got used to getting every single item unlocked within the first day of an update being released, but fuck them, they need to grow up and dry their eyes anyway.

What is based on exponential growth?? The rate at which you receive items? That's a ridiculous statement if that is what you meant.

I only got one item so far, the Dead Ringer.
It's an OK item, but it really depends on where you fight. imo it's more useful in large areas.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

That's not going to help, I see no gameplay change in the last 2 weeks.

To make it more friendly for new players.

My friend started playing last Friday, I was explaining the new system of getting items and his first 2 words? "That's stupid." He plays mainly as scout and sniper so far, after 5 hours of playing, he hasn't unlocked anything at all.

To make it easier to catch people cheating to get the unlocks.

It's not cheating, it's a small abuse of the system.. asking people to let you kill them for achievements.

To allow them to build it into Steam Cloud.

You don't understand.. the unlocks were already implemented with Steam cloud because of the achievement system, they HAVE implemented the backpack system into Steam cloud.

To allow them to create a trading system around it.

Yeah, because their first thought was "We need to let new players get things easily!" oh no, wait, that's exactly the opposite of what they're trying to do.

To allow them to expand the items available in the future without having to make even more achievements.

Granted.

I eagerly await the upcoming improvements to this system, because right now it is garbage. When I can work towards specific unlockables (I assume they'll make it so you're more likely to unlock an item for the class you're currently using or something similar to that) I'll be much happier.

Says the guy who just defended cheating.

Your opinion is worth, approximately, shit on any matter concerning multiplayer games if you defend cheating, to be honest.

I think it would work better if you could "buy" the unlocks. Let me explain. You already get points in the game for doing various things, i.e. killing enemies, defending caps, winning battles, etc. What if, you could save those points, and use them to buy whatever unlocks you want? I'm not saying that it is a good idea, I'm just putting it out there.

Valve themselves said that it should take around 20 hours. "But wait", you may ask, "I won't play twenty hours as a scout or sniper!" If that is true, then it doesn't matter whether you get the unlocks or not, as you simply won't use them.

No, I didn't defend cheating, I said you were wrong. Cheating is wrong, and I'm quite happy that TF2 has very few cheaters (I've only ever seen 1 guy speedhack, nothing else). Going into a server full of people to get achievements isn't exactly cheating, since I could have done the same thing on any server.. it's just faster. Trying to kill a sentry with a pistol in a proper game as a scout isn't gonna happen, but on an achievement server it's easy to keep spawning and trying. I got 75% of my achievements through proper play (all the medic achievements, most of the scout, pyro and heavy achievements, all through play), though I was working towards getting those achievements obviously.. going out of my way to get some of them.. I mean, I don't even use any of those classes except medic.

That's the whole point, achievements are hard and many are far removed from normal gameplay, by joining servers where people let you / help you earn achievements without putting in the relevant amount of effort you are cheating to bypass the system.

You can dress it up in all the excuses you want, but it was cheating plain and simple.

You have a very strange concept of cheating.

Regardless of this, whether or not they have weapons after grinding hardly affects most people. It's still possible to kill them whatever weapon they have, since all have some sort of weakness that can be exploited.

For example, while Natascha might be good against Scouts, she's still screwed against Sasha, and Natascha doesn't suddenly make the Heavy invincible to headshots.

You complain about everyone crying about the new weapon system, yet you seem to be crying just as much about everyone else crying. Calm the fuck down.

I hope you realize you can do the same thing and go into an achievement server. Your not gaining any unfair advantage due to the new system, as anyone can get new items now. Besides, if it is cheating, why isn't valve banning anyone? Exactly.

In what way?

The system was very simple, do X (which is hard) to earn Y.

Your "minor abuse" completely bypasses the difficulty of completing X, which is cheating.

Think of it in terms of running a marathon, the X you have to complete is running the whole thing, bypassing the majority of the distance and jogging across the finish line to claim Y is cheating.

lmao.

Someone asked a question, I answered it, someone else replied, I responded.

TOTALLY CRYING THERE, FOR REAL.

Has anyone else noticed the VALVe servers that have started to pop up recently?

I'm cool with them since they are not running mods, but it's a little irritating when everyone's ping takes an upward spike because the server did.

No, Valve gave us achievements to unlock. These achievements are things like kill 3 enemies in a row while ubered, or other small things like that. They never said "kill 3 enemies while ubered in a non-custom map", because that is the only difference. The marathon analogy only applies to actual cheating, for example using the console commands that I believe could unlock achievements if used (I might be wrong here but I've definitely read stuff about that).

At least you still had to work for the weapons on the old system, now you can just.. sleep! :)

This is my only concern. If you were achievement farming, at least you would have to play for 2-3 hours. With the new system, you can go into a idle server, go to sleep, wake up with a shitload of guns.

I got glitched up :p In the last few minutes I've received over 20 items. No hacks (though the server is full of people yelling at me :-[), just.. a combination of luck and a bug I guess. It's actually annoying..
