The moment I heard about the Power of Three promotion going on, I knew it wasn't about fame or fortune. Like Tom says, it's about building bonds with other animators, programmers and musicians so that it's easier in the future to collaborate on projects and allow better submissions to get into the portal.
What people don't understand (from the vast majority of posts on the previous PO3 threads) is that the presence of heavy-hitters like HappyHarry, Luis, AdamPhillips, Egoraptor, The-Swain, etc, benefits the unknown artists just as much, if not more. For artists like me who have a few submissions into the portal and is struggling to make connections and reach out, this is the kind of opportunity I was begging for. Getting my submissions on the same page as those guys, in the same event, can help me gain some recognition. Look at Peixeaquatico. He's a great flash artist who just wants the opportunity to make a game and this is his chance to show the community what he has to offer! (I think he's still struggling to find a programmer, too... It's a shame...)
This isn't a competition. Far from it. It's a social event. An event that helps build our relationships with other Newgrounders.
I'm in this to make a game, and I'm dedicated to my goal. Pure and simple, I just want to test myself while getting to know other users and what they can bring to the table so that when I'm working on another project in the future, I can call on them, if anything.
And you can bet your ass I will.
