Why hate Scientology?

Okay so it seems like everywhere on the internet people rave about how much they hate Scientology. I honestly don't get it. I'm an atheist so I dislike all religions equally, but I just don't get what makes Scientologists any worse then Muslims, Mormons, or Christians.

Please, explain!

There's a distinct difference between a religion and a cult. Scientology fall in the "cult" category.

Take a quick look at their wikipedia article.

Actually they're recognized by the US government as a religion. How is Scientology any more of a cult then other religions? They have a lot of the same practices as other religions.

Gotta tell you, wikipedia isnt necessarily a great source for information on the subject, but calling it a cult doesn't explain anything. Many established religions today were called "cults" before they became more well known. Why blindly hate something you don't even understand?

that's a bit worse than the established religions, that actuall have played an important roll in bringing the society to where we are today - although they are to blame for alot too, the social roll they've played is more worth than some fucked up celebrities who can buy their way up the ranking-ladder in the scientology-society.
i dunno, i just think the worst part is when they start spreading their propaganda to others, and use their status as celebrities to do that - but then again, all religions work that way. it's just extra lame with scientology for the above reasons.

yes it is a cult and full of shit as well, scietology was created alot more around 50 years ago,(take a year or two) by a sicence fiction writter named L Ron Hubbard, who only a year before creating his "religion" said, "The quickest way to make a million dollars, is to create a new religion"
he took his crappy science fiction writings and attempted to turn them in to a "belief"

The space aliens thing bugs me. When you're talking about something as massive as we believe the universe to be it's absurd to say there isn't other life due to the fact we can't prove even beyond a reasonable doubt there isn't other life.

That said, scientology is still dumb.

It's a question of mileage, really. Now, as an atheist I do agree that just because something has been believed in for 1,000 years or 50 years doesn't make it any more or less objectively right, Scientology was -- this has been documented -- created by L. Ron Hubbard to make money, and he also had a habit of lying about all kinds of shit.

Now, if someone really believes in Xenu and body Thetans, fine, that's none of my business. Similarly, it's none of my business if you believe in one, a dozen or a million gods, or none, what is my business, is if you want me to change my life fit what your god or gods (or lack of gods) say. The only authority in those matters I trust, is the social contract between humans, and secular law.

Islam is easily worse than Scientology, even if it weren't for the outrageous misogyny, homophobia, intolerance and suppression of free speech and free thought that runs rampant in Islam. The punishment for leaving Scientology is bullying, humiliation, loss of reputation, ostracism and isolation. The punishment for leaving Islam is DEATH.

If Scientology had as many adherents as Islam, it might come close to being just as terrible. Their methods certainly have a lot of similarity. The weakness of Scientology, however, would still be that most of its adherents are rich white people, thus preventing them from playing the race card like Islam. No doubt Scientologists would still try claim that they're being persecuted whenever someone expresses reasonable criticism or well-deserved mockery of their religion. There would be lawsuits, protests, blackmailing etc., but probably no beheadings.

Scientology has become a corporation with extremely strong lawyers and they attempt to silence anyone who speaks badly about them.

It's a selective group of which one must pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to become a full member.
