Getting a tattoo

I've recently made the decision to get my first tattoo in the next few months when I turn 18, I've already got a rough sketch of what I want to get done which I'm going to refine before I go and get it, but I'm not excatly clued up on the process of getting it done. I'm pretty sure I can deal with the pain of getting a tattoo but I'm far more concerned with getting it done with the right person.
This is a pretty vauge topic, so I'll just ask does anyone have any advice or personal experience they could share with me about this? And Specifically if anyone lives in the northwest (Manchester) area of the UK and could reccomend me a particular tattoo artist. I really want to get it right. Thanks.

Yeh I know, it's the most generic, unimaginative design you could ask for. I'm planning on designing it myself, I took art / graphic design at college so hopefully I know what I'm doing ;P

If you're getting a tattoo you should have it planned in advance what you want. Don't just walk into a tattoo parlour and be like "I'll have that one!"
Even better, design your own.

First of all, make sure you're getting something that represents YOU. Since you're designing it yourself, I'm sure that's taken care of.
As for who to go to, make sure they are all certified, used sterilized equipment, disposable one-use needles, and I've heard it's good if they've been vaccinated for Hep C.
Good luck

did you not read my post? I am designing it myself. I might do a quick sketch on my tablet and show you guys what I'm thinking.

Do what you want to do, don't be pressurized by other people to stuff that you don't to do.
The nice thing about egotists is that they don't talk about other people.

I've gone with tons of my friends to get tattoos. The easiest way to do it is to have a rough sketch of what you want, just walk into the parlor, and tell them what you want. They'll work with you on finishing the drawing if you want them to do it or they'll just use your drawing if you want them to.
Then just schedule an appointment if you're happy with the artist. If you want a different artist just tell them you're looking for a different style or just plain tell them you want another artist. They won't care.
They make it very easy to get it done. Best of luck.

Also don't get an Asian letter tattoo. House put down all my opinions on those.
Nonconformity - right. I can't remember the last time saw a twenty-something kid with a tattoo of an Asian letter on his wrist. You are one wicked free thinker! You want to be a rebel? Stop being cool. Wear a pocket protector like he does, and get a hair cut like the Asian kids that don't leave the library for twenty hour stretches. They're the ones who don't care what you think. My advice is don't get a cliche. Get something original, that isn't totally retarded.
That includes tattoos in languages you can't even fucking read. For all you know it could say "I'm Gay".

Get this on your back=
Kookaburra sits on an old gum tree,
Merry, merry king of the bush is he,
Laugh, kookaburra, laugh, kookaburra
Gay your life must be.

it's kind of hard to suggest a tattoo if we don't know what you are into. what are your own idea's for the design of your tattoo?
my dad has a tattoo of a celtic cross (it's not the traditional celtic cross, it looks more like a shuriken) which isn't your most original idea.

I'd be willing to travel as far as blackpool / birmingham for the right artist, but I'm sure there must be talent in manchester anyway, does this guy have a website or a myspace or something?
And guys - I'M NOT TAKING SUGGESTIONS. I already have a rough idea of what I want, plus I wouldnt get something tattooed on me that I heard off someone here (:

Okay, so after reading through this thread, here's the advice I can give you:
A) The BBS is retarded
B) Look for a well lit, sterile tattoo shop with a friendly atmosphere and plenty of satisfied customers. The place I went to was amazing.
Make sure you like the people that work there. Where I went, everyone was real awesome and friendly. Be sure to see some of the artist's portfolios of the work they've previously done. I went to a place that that specializes in custom jobs, so we talked back and forth for a little while about my tattoo, set up an appointment, and I e-mailed some files to the guy for him to look over. This is a permanent thing, so make sure you're happy with what you're getting and confident in the abilities of the artist. Don't feel pressured about it, and if they make you feel pressured strongly consider going to a different place.
The cleanliness of the place is very important. Make sure they use disposable gloves, autoclave their equipment, keep a clean store, etc. When I got mine, the dude changed his gloves every time he touched something that hadn't been cleaned. Place was cleaner than a hospital. And great lighting is important, too.
Also, it's a general courtesy to tip the artist when you're done.
