The best way to think of a project is to take your mind as far away from it as you possibly can. For me at least, one of the problems I have is that; even though I have ideas in my head, none of them seem interesting or fresh. After a good break (play a video game, draw, read, etc...) I can rethink everything and sometimes I find some of my best ideas were the ones I wasn't feeling at that moment.
Another thing you can do is brainstorm. Sometimes it helps to have people's insights (Kinda like this) but you need to be able to have your own ideas and thoughts as well. One problem with a thread like this is that everyone has their own methodology and habits when it comes to the creative process.
You say you need a story. Isn't that the best part about being an animator, seeing your own ideas and stories coming to life. I'm really new to the whole animating thing. I've been uploading audio for a while now, but I decided to test the waters of animation. I just put my first flash up a day ago xp. The project is really ambitious (especially considering it's my fist). http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/49 5899 Writing the story has been the hardest part. Even though I've written stories before, it was easier for me to learn how to and animate the teaser.
If your having trouble think of a story... Just relax, one will come.
