Draw from life. Find a video of a can exploding and rotoscope it. Par example, this music video for a nu-metal band that was popular half a decade ago where exactly that effect happens...

lazy. i agree with everything you said except the part about rotoscoping. rotoscoping is lazy and it can make things look out of place in your movie if your style suddenly changes for one part.
I've covered wars, ya know.

Rotoscoping is the act of tracing over a movie for animation purposes. And yes, it can make the animation look out of place if you try to copy every element. What I actually meant was just freeze framing the movie and copying the motion and the important elements in your own style instead of rotoscoping

If you want it to look natural, then KAYN's plan is the way to go. If you need it to look graphically stylized, you may want to consider a crude particle system. It depends on the style your going for.

Ok , check out this.
If you're animating the bullet in slow motion , make it this way. First , the bullet hits the can , slowly the metal bends , look at this picture and pay attention to the entering & exit holes. then , the liqud bursts out of the can like in this picture. after the bullet is out , the liqud starts pouring slower out of the can like in the first picture.

Use the video as a guide and draw it bit by bit.
Dont trace the video. Rotoscoping and tracing always looks shitty and terrible. ESPECIALLY in flash cartoons.
