I don't get why they sell them. I don't get why they expect people to buy a computer which takes 15 seconds to open Firefox, that will crash and cause them frustration as they struggle to close an unresponsive application.

It's just plain costumer abuse. Even a poor family doesn't deserve that.

Actually... Computer prices have dropped dramatically lately, and not because of their hardware. The reason why you see computers for 500-600$ is because they don't come with any software like they used to. Internet explorer, and a trial version of norton and that's it (no MS office or anything). You can go to the store and get a computer for 400$ with a 100gb hardrive, 1 gb RAM, and a 256mb graphics card - this isn't TERRIFIC but it's pretty decent if you're not into gaming or whatever.

My PC was 500 dollars and it has Windows Vista Home Premium with an Amd Athlon Dual core processor and 3gb RAM, it takes about 3 minutes to boot and starts firefox and other programs in a second flat.

If someone does possess a $400.00 computer, they can easily fix the poor performance.

(1) Uninstall Windows
(2) Install SabayonLinux, or another flavor of Linux.

Haha, but seriously though, you can easily correct the poor performance. :P

Really? All 400$ and less computers in my Best Buy have 512 mg RAM, which is just horrendous with Windows Vista.

Oh for the love of god! 512 mg if RAM isn't great, but its just fine if all you need is the web and the occasional MS word. But remember, you NEVER never never EVER run vista if you have lower than 2 gigs of ram... EVER. Install windows XP, I promise you will be much happier.

You can build a 400$ computer with a quad core and 4GB of ram. Just order the parts you need and build it yourself

Sucks for those people. The computers all have Windows Vista pre-installed and there is no option to downgrade without having to pay for it.

I'm sure the computer works fine when it's not filled with viruses and shit.

Lol

I bought my computer in '07 (I know, I know... but hey, I don't give a shit).

Came with Windows XP Home, AMD Athlon 64, 1 gig of RAM, 120 GB hard drive, 512 MB nvidia graphics card, and some shitty 5.1 sound card, and a 19" widescreen. Really all I've ever done with it is swap out the RAM with 4 gigs and voila. $600.

Owned for about 2 years and formatted once. Other'n that no problems. But hey, I also don't flood it with 10,000 MP3s I never listen to and 20 gigs of porn I never watch.

Also got one uh 'dem dere Mac Minis for $700. I don't play favourites.

Yeah, you're right... The logic of selling computers that don't have the specs to match the OS installed is something else. I'm pretty sure that you can get a 'custom' computer done at Frys for 400$ with WinXP on it, but you can't expect much from Frys these days (or ever)

I still don't understand why companies insist on only putting 512 Mb of RAM in computers these days. Vista will not run well on that. They will put a good enough processor and video card, but they can't put 2 Gb of RAM? What don't you people understand about moar!!!

There are a lot of poor families out there, and selling $400 computers gives them easier access to computers.

Soon, computers in homes will be nearly as common as heating and plumbing infrastructures.

400 Dollars? That's pretty expensive. I got my computer for that exact same amount divided by 20. Yes, very cheap. It's working though.

600 is one and a half times 400. There's a ton of difference.
