"Attacks on fellow soldiers, known as fraggings, were not uncommon during the Vietnam war but are believed to be rare in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Not really, no. Not common at all.

Christ, that's depressing. Especially for the families of the victims... they all died in the line of duty... technically... but still. It's not quite the same.

So unexpected. You would never expect to have the guy that you trust with your life shoot you.

An unstoppable and undeniable delusion brought on by PTSD and/or other severe psychological stressors that are produced by war, I'd guess.

It stated that the sergeant who killed those men had served several tours of duty over a period of six years. It sucks worse to know that this could have been prevented if he'd been demobilized sooner.

This is actually really sad news. Just goes to show how much stress soldiers go through. I mean I'm pretty sure the shooter was severely rattled for him to do that.
Reading that article really got me all sad and stuff.

I know that war is hell but why kill your friends and fellow allies? It doesn't make sense.

I think you know how to type "war is hell." I do know you have absolutely no clue about how to even imagine how much of a hell it is. I doubt any of us, aside from at least one user I can think of, can either.
So you're accurate when you say "it doesn't make any sense [to us], " but don't try and make it seem like it was a senseless, random act.

A number of things go through a person's mind. It's what is exactly that goes through their head that explains why they would do such a thing.
You've all heard the expression "War is hell", right? That's one way of looking at it.
In war, you can't help but have these thoughts run through your head. With the many stress triggers in war, you can see what can cause such actions. All this psychological stress can lead to any number of events. In this case, friendly killing.

No. My grandpa served in Vietnam (He just gave me his service rifle. I have it on my page) and he's still messed up. I once woke up to a gun shot and him yelling. He had put a bullet through the ceiling and then thrown a knife into the wall. But he wouldn't talk about what happened.
The horrors of war are unimaginable. Especially if your in an extremely foreign environment.

Scotland. England. Any place without guns has little to no shooting sprees.

Well it may be a different size. Hell if I know. It was his practice rifle. He didn't tell me the size.

I'm sure there's a statistician or two out there that would have a bone to pick with that claim...

Maybe this 'dickhead' snapped. Maybe he'd seen one too many killings and wanted it to stop. Maybe he'd hated these guys. Maybe it was random. The thing is, as civilians we can't know what war does to someone. Our rules don't apply to people who've lived horrors we could never imagine - caused horrors too perhaps. The main thing is, we do not know war so you really cannot judge someone so adversely affected by it.
