What do you think is the best type of last boss storyline wise? Note: some of these can overlap

God/Creator/Super-being - An all powerful entity (the entity was either originally all powerful or has become all powerful before the chronological storyline/start of the game)

An Ascended Character - A character who has become all powerful or significantly more powerful during the chronological storyline of the game, meaning that at the start of the story the character was not all-powerful or as powerful as he is when you fight him as the last boss

A Rival - The main character's rival throughout the story

Just Another Foe - Essentially just another enemy, not all powerful or significantly more powerful than all the other enemies the main character has faced in the game

Creation - An entity which was created by someone and is either 1) fulfilling its purpose or 2) gone out of control

Summoned Being - A being that was summoned into the character's world

The type of villan depends entirely what sort of story you're doing. However I would say the most fufilling villan for me is the rival - think Sepiroth. HE was a villan.

An Ascended Character as it causes more of a surprise to the player and in some cases that character has reasons for becoming more powerful mainly Jealousy, Revenge or they just wanna be AWESOME!

Other.

A fucking massive robot the size of Moscow and the shape of a big spider, and it runs around firing rockets and whatnot all over the place. Also every thirty seconds it detonates a huge bomb which kills everyone but you have to jump to avoid it.

And it can go into 'stealth mode' where you can't see it, and also it can fly.

Another move it has is the ability to fire a huge web onto one of the planets and drop it down on its opponents.

It's funny how someone already brought up Sepiroth(not really). He fits the first 3 categories fine. Since he was very powerful at the beginning, and became significantly stronger by the end, he was also a rival for cloud.

I like the ascended character idea for a good final villain.

None of those. The best type of final boss is the kind that used to be the good guy or one of the main protagonists or whatever... I mean, when it's set up in such a way that you CAN'T see the plot twist coming from a mile away, that is.

but then you get a bunch of creepy fan fiction and emo kids worshiping said villain and adding them to the emo pantheon of "deep, misunderstood heroes". :(

Definitely the one where the final boss is like the protagonist's brother or something. Also, it takes for fucking ever to beat him because he keeps healing up and you have to heal cause he nearly one-hits you.

I have lost a lot of respect for that series. One of the things i always liked was the music and even that receives more praise than it deserves. I had always like Kujas them from final fantasy 9 since it was one of the more sinister songs i had ever heard in games(despite him being one of the most ridiculous looking villains of all time).

But after listening to it i have noticed that the composer has a habit of remixing and reusing pieces or parts of his same songs, not even mentioning the 5 or six different remixes in the same game alone of kujas theme.

I'm sure if i looked and put actually effort into which this took me no effort to find i would find countless other remade songs by the same unoriginal guy. I used to have so much respect for Nobuo, or was it Yasunori that made tyrano lair?

Those are some good classifications, but you can find pretty good examples for all of em.

God/Creator/Superbeing: God (duh), the shadow queen - Xenogears, paper mario 2

An Ascended Character: Ganondorf/Vaati - Zelda series

A Rival: The rival (duh) - Pokemon

Just Another Foe: Brock - Dead Rising

Creation: Guilt/Stigma - Trauma Center series (couldnt think of anything else)

Summoned Being: Volks demon - Geist

Other: Loads - Loads

Those are usually crap. It...Just doesn't make sense, suddenly you discover the "power" behind the monsters you fighted was actually from OMFG GOD. The story simply turns to shit, instead of having a massive plot twist.

An Ascended Character - A character who has become all powerful or significantly more powerful during the chronological storyline of the game, meaning that at the start of the story the character was not all-powerful or as powerful as he is when you fight him as the last boss

This is the kind that I love. Character transformations are very important to stories, and it just makes it more realistic. Shame it doesn't fit well in many scenarios.

A Rival - The main character's rival throughout the story

Imagine Gary. Meh.

Just Another Foe - Essentially just another enemy, not all powerful or significantly more powerful than all the other enemies the main character has faced in the game

I've played FF1. What a bore, no story. Only impossible fights.

Creation - An entity which was created by someone and is either 1) fulfilling its purpose or 2) gone out of control

That's fine, very common in horror games but interesting nonetheless. But what happens to the creator?

Summoned Being - A being that was summoned into the character's world

Mmmmmmmmmm. Oblivion. Niiiiiiice.

Other - Specify in your reply

Gotta love those toony enemies that are simply goofy.

I didn't post Sephiroth: I posted a guy that, belive it or not, was STRONGER then Sephiroth. And is being concidered the hardest boss in FF, if not RPG games altogether.

If it was all powerful, then it could not be killed.

See deity.

A Rival - The main character's rival throughout the story

A good one.

Just Another Foe - Essentially just another enemy, not all powerful or significantly more powerful than all the other enemies the main character has faced in the game

Too easy.

Creation - An entity which was created by someone and is either 1) fulfilling its purpose or 2) gone out of control

Quite good.

Summoned Being - A being that was summoned into the character's world

Quite good.

A clone of the protagonist.

Or maybe a sister, relative, or just a sentient potato.

God/Creator/Super-being - For me it has to be necron in FF9, The reason for this is because my brother and I struggled with him so much and ended the fight with 12HP with one character on berserk(Flashy red stuff) Although it would have been cool if necron would of been involved in the whole storyline rather than just showing up at the end.

I did find more satisfaction with the god type figure. Grandia 2 had this where you're fighting a demi god who wants to become a god or for God Of War where you have to beat Ares to take over as the God of War. Other boss battles just don't do it for me like that type does.

Read into Necron, there some interesting theories that make a lot sense.

Honestly, I don't care about how well final bosses work in terms of the story line. I just want to fight some cool looking giant monster. There's nothing more satisfying than taking out a ridiculously huge boss monster with your comparatively minuscule character. The resistance series got it right.

Yep, it's a sig allright.

The Eternal Enemy

This boss is a puppet of your real foe, and no matter how many times you beat it, it just keeps getting back up, ready for more. This boss cannot be destroyed, cannot be defeated, can't even come close to any of that while the controller remains. Generally speaking, your character could fight it forever, but after awhile they'll figure out they can't win unless they find the controller.
