This is all really hard to take in as an AS beginner. I'm trying to make a top down game, and at this point all I've managed to do it get my character to move and draw a level. I'm kind of looking for help as far as making walls in the level solid and making item pickups and stuff... anyway, I figure you guys are the ones to point me in the right direction seeing as Tutorial Collab '08 isn't very helpful because it explains very little.
AS2 in CS4, btw.

Doesn't mean it's better to learn.

It's better to start learning w/. The fact that it's not better than AS3 is a no-brainer, but if he's having problems w/ AS2, he should at least get the basics of AS2 down before he starts w/ AS3

I agree, start with AS3. It may be a little harder to pick up at first, but the learning curve is only slightly higher and he won't have to re-learn everything once he's done.
If you are looking for a more entry level "How to program" I would suggest leaning another language all together -- but then that wouldn't help with flash development in the short term, which is what everyone focuses on. :)

...When I switched I didn't have to relearn everything, but then again, I wouldn't recommend you staying w/ AS2 UNLESS you get a book. "Beginning Flash/Game Programming for Dummies" By Andy Harris was a big help, I never actually used the whole book, but great for introducing you to the world of programming =)
