Wrap your brain around this drunkenly slurred and mumbled statement. "I know the sky is blue, but I don't believe the sky is blue."

I don't understand but I'll take a guess: you don't believe in what the blue sky stands for?

It is blue because the water vapor in the air is blue.

That's like saying I know blood is blue, but I don't believe blood is blue.

It's simply stating that what you see is not true, blood is blue until oxygen reaches it, at which time it turns red, so we're brought up believing blood is red when it's not.
The sky is blue because of the atmosphere mixed with other such things, when in reality it's a pitch black area dotted with stars.

water is transparent, correct? i thought it was because of the ocean to.

But that color could be altered in anyway, depending on the weather.
Sunset makes it red/orange
if its nighttime it is black, or dark blue. There isn't a permanent color of the sky, because the sky isn't an object, its just infact a void

No, it's blue because of the way light scatters through the water vapor. That's why it can also be orange, red, purple, etc

well its red after it gets oxygen from the lungs. then it turns blue when the oxygen is turned into co2 and exhaled and etc. ami right? im just guessin here

That's what I'm saying, there is no actual color of the sky itself. Like I said before, its not an object, its a void.

You sir are very much correct. The sky isn't technically there as an object... but it is there in our minds as a concept. A concept that is considered blue by most accounts.

Blood is never blue, lol. It goes from dark red to bright red after its oxygenated.

The vacuum of space is a void, the different layers of our atmosphere is not.

You could also say that NOTHING really has any inherent color, it's just a matter of which EM wavelengths reflect and which EM wavelengths are absorbed. :P

...wow....I think I just got mind-blown...
Saying nothing has an actual color sounds both correct and not correct. Depending on the situation I would say. If I where to shine a light at my wall and say that changed its color, that might not add up. Our eyes will see it as a different color, but the color that the object actually is doesn't get altered. It appears altered because of our eyesight, and the ways we see colors.
...is that what you ment.. I'm just wondering :P

Could you say mind-blow?

Wikied:

If human blood were exposed to vacuum, it would lose all oxygen (bound to the hemoglobin molecules in its red cells), as it does, in part, when it supplies oxygen to various organs as it passes through the body. This state of deoxyhemoglobin has a purplish color.

Color itself isn't a "real" property, basically. Light is the object and the property that changes is its wavelength. Think of it this way -- x-rays, radio signals, the microwaves that cook your popcorn... it's ALL electromagnetic radiation, it's all the same thing. What we see as color is just a thin little slice out of the whole EM spectrum. Humans are sensitive to certain wavelengths but there are creatures that are either less OR more sensitive than us to the different wavelengths out there. Like, imagine your TV remote. You press a button but you don't see anything really happening except on the TV itself. IF we were equipped with photoreceptors in our eyes that were sensitive to infrared then we'd actually be able to see the light flickers coming out of the remote.

Hell, if we were more way more sensitive to light than we are now it would probably suck. Radio waves are just another form of EM radiation and we shoot those around everywhere. I don't think you'd really want to be able to see all that stuff all at once. Talk about having your mind blown. Sheeeit.

You know there's a difference between purple and blue, right?

Anyway.

Blood is red for the same reason that rust is red.

There are creatures whose blood uses copper instead of iron to bind oxygen. You know how copper turns greenish-blue when oxidized (e.g. Statue of Liberty)? Yeah well guess what color blood those things have.

But I don't really believe God exists. I like to think that the universe is a little more complicated than that.

Insect blood is almost never red; they don't have haemoglobin. It's not needed because of their tracheal system and spiracles that allow oxygen to reach the tissues directly. They don't have a closed sytem of circulation either, blood gets to flow around freely. Wooh!

i know this is a really nerdy way to contribute to this thread but, the sky is blue because blue is the colour that refracts through air the best, or at least its the best colour that is visible to the naked eye,so thats why the sky is blue, not because its reflected from the sea. I know this because i go on wikipedia too much, and i have a compulsion to correct people, my bad.

It is blue because the water vapor in the air is blue.

It si blue because nitrogen particles that make up about 70% of the earth's atmosphere reflect blue light more than anything else, like a filter.
