The term United States more refers to the states themselves, collected together in a union.
There really isn't a good way to phrase that sentence, unfortunately, but I think you got it as good as you could.
Except for maybe saying, "American States".

On the topic of the thread, I was surprised at how well Minnesota and Alaska did, and at how poorly South Carolina preformed.

What are they basing it on? It seems that the high rated areas are also where most of the poverty is.
