How much weight gets put into that is entirely dependent on the player. For me Gordon is angry when I' m angry and screaming obscenities when I am, but for you he's just some mute dude running around killing stuff.
What I assumed was that Valve already took the 'Silent Protagonist' as a cliche, since it has been a staple for many games, and worked around or with that. Say for instance when characters remark about how quiet Gordon is, I know Alex does at least. Not to mention the way characters don't ask Gordon questions that they expect answers to, like they know he's not going to answer back.
