Now, we all knowl that Jazz has a history of being "wild". More recently though, Jazz bands are going full on into the territory of Noise music.

Nmperign, Jason Lescallet, Sedonna Vortex, UFO Hotspot, Günther Müller, Jazzfinger, Orphan Fairytale and Heathen Shame to name a few. But there are many, many more. It seems that you can't go to an Experimental or an Avant-Garde festival without encountering this.

Now, there does seem to be a bit of lip service to Drone music, sometimes they seem to explore Minimalism, but I honestly have a hard time calling these musicians "Jazz", although most others disagree.

What say you?

Links for your pleasure:
Nmperign
Jason Lescalleet
Heathen Shame
Günther Müller
Jazzfinger
Orphan Fairytale
MOAR ORPHAN FAIRYTALE! (not like the rest of her stuff tho)

This isn't jazz at all. I can't comprehend how ANYONE would mistake it for jazz.

Hey, it's not me that are calling them Jazz. I do love them, but I don't see them as being, well, Jazzy.

Because it's inventive and freeform, the hallmarks of the genre of beatnik music known as "jazz"

Look, NOT ALL JAZZ IS SWING MUSIC, OK?!?!?!

My band Sin City ScoundrelsOur song Vixen of Doom
HATE.
Because 2,000 years of "For God so loved the world" doesn't trump 1.2 million years of "Survival of the Fittest."

I just don't really get what constitutes Jazz anymore. I mean, I've got plenty of stuff that I'm told is Jazz (Monk, Miles, Charlie & His Orchestra (NSSwing!).

Having said all that, I don't understand how, say, James Chance is considered Jazz, whereas the X-Ray Spex aren't.

Oh well, I like it all. :D

I'll agree with the other commenters. Jazz, when narrowly defined, does follow some pretty good rules regarding tonality and rhythm.

I would not place any of this with jazz music. Perhaps the artists concerned with these current recordings have historically been grouped together as jazz artists, but much of this music appears to be along the lines of futurism, that was popular in 1900-1920's in Italy with artists like 'Luigi Russolo', or the atonal modernist movements emerging around the same time period from people like Schoenberg that continue today, ie: (atonal, serialistic, aleatory compositions, or as the topic starter even mentioned, minimalistic compositions).

The instruments used in the Gunter Muller video are extremely reminiscent of the intonarumori (noise instruments) used by Luigi Russolo. While the background and reasoning for making the music would apparently be different (they were doing it to explore the glory of technologies of 1920), I would still say that this music is simply an attempt at being modernist, while ignoring most, if not all, of the jazz roots.

Oh well, just saying what I know on the subject, which I suppose is more historical that contemporary so maaaybe I'm out of place here.

Yeah. I play jazz trumpet. I know it's not all swing. But seriously, stuff like this is a stretch.

When I think jazz, I think rhythm. This stuff has none.

I must strongly disagree. While I know that Noise music originated from them, they had specific goals with the image - dynamic and a celebration of the machine age. I don't hear that with these people.

Plus, Marinetti would laugh at Orphan Fairytale, because she's a woman. Then he's punch her in the fucking face and drive a train over her.
