How many of you do it?

I have always built all of my furniture from scratch. Buying wood from the Home Depot is much cheaper than buying pre-made furniture, and when I make it myself I can completely customize it to fit my needs at a level greater than any commercially made furniture can provide. If you know what you are doing and you have the time and patience to do it properly it can really pay off.

So how many NGers build their own shit?

Well my dad makes furniture sometimes for outside, but we really don't do it for indoors. He makes really nice rocking chairs and he stains and glosses them. I have one in my room.

I don't usually make chairs. Chairs are the only furniture I would actually buy, yet all of the desks/tables/beds that I use were made by me.

My grandad was big into woodwork, and we've inherited quite a few of those creations. They're almost all still in great condition, and they all have that personal charm to them. As far as I know, our dining table, as well as its chairs, were made by him. Also, quite a few of our cabinets, and a grand-daughter clock (which unfortunately isn't in the same condition it once was, but it still works after you wind it). In addition to those, our huge bureau that houses the main house phone, a lamp, all of our contact detail stuff and a ton of cassette tapes was made by him too I believe.

But as for the question, do I make my own stuff, I have to admit, no I don't. It's down to a mixture of me being awful with the practical skills required for something like that, and some sort of laziness. The rest of my family are the same, and we've probably bought more pre-made stuff than ever these past few years. It's sad, because as I said, the other stuff has a nice charm. It's one of the signs of the times I think... or just us, I don't know.

We do a mix of both. We buy some things and build some.

Most of the furniture that we buy usually fits our needs but we have to add / modify things when something is not as we would like it to be.

Oh, don't be so shy.

I could probably knock up a few chairs and tables here and there. If I could be bothered to do so.

We have a neighbor who had a crush on my mom. He built our living room couches and our whole basement bathroom.

Ever since I watched that, all my "recommended for you" videos have somehow turned into "how to smoke smarties".

Chairs and couches I buy. I have made chairs in the past, but only the frame would be wood I would use fabric stuffed with either cotton or foam to make it comfy.

Desks and stuff like that I would make completely out of wood.

I don't have the tools either, but whenever I visit my parents I can use all of my dad's tools and build some furniture for myself. He has a table saw, electric sanders, drills, hammers, clamps, a shitload of scrapwood/nails/screws etc. Pretty much everything I would need.
