I don't know why people think it's a Western name; it means Boy in Japanese. And Jo? If you meet a girl who spells their name like that, it means girl in Japanese. Original, huh?

To stay on topic; the only japanese word I know for boy is "Shonen". The word "Jo" just seems like a quick way to say "Shoujo" if you ask me. I can't say I am an expert on these things though.

The funny thing about this is that my name is Dan (well, Daniel but my friends call me Dan) and so is one of my best friends from Secondary school (High School). He's Chinese, not Japanese.
Now I despise the Japs just a wee bit...

San is the Japanese form of 'Mr.'.
Daniel san basically means Mr. Daniel.
And I forgot to say that I've only ever heard of the Japanese 'dan' to mean black belt rank in karate. White up to brown being kyu.

From what I've googled - Dan / Daniel is Hebrew but also Irish... not sure which came first but it wasn't a name created by the Japanese.
So.... my name's Dan and I'm not Japanese... not part Irish and the only one in my family who was Jewish was my Nan.
I like to think it's an ancient word that means - "That one who stole the cookie from the cookie jar" ( cookie equivalent )
