Why don't make a standalone Windows application?

Can you explain that a bit more?

well if i did create a program you would be able to do everything that the site can do

i would rather not do it for a few reasons
1. newgrounds would lose money because everything can be accessed from the site
2. less people would trust the security of newgrounds

i think the idea of a full program should wait, i'm not in the position at the moment to be able to create such a program

but the thing is once i create this what will i get out of it, what will NG get out of it? it just doesnt seem to be the best thing to do at the moment

back to the app

still havin problems with the god damn flyouts

You reckon?

Bearing in mind I don't use widgets (Win7 change from Vista) OR third party applications for any site. I highly doubt that the other 99.9% of newgrounds will. You may get a few people using your app / widget, but you seriously can't think that EVERYONE wants to use whatever you develop?

I would much rather have newgrounds coming through my web browser with all my security addins than a 3rd party app that may as well be phising for passwords.

Lolwat.

i would rather not do it for a few reasons
1. newgrounds would lose money because everything can be accessed from the site

If you manage to parse all the html and javascript and the like and actually extract the needed data from it you can not be a dick and extract the ads too.

2. less people would trust the security of newgrounds

Why the hell would they do that? At worst they would complain about some shitty app to Tom or something.

i think the idea of a full program should wait, i'm not in the position at the moment to be able to create such a program

but the thing is once i create this what will i get out of it, what will NG get out of it? it just doesnt seem to be the best thing to do at the moment

It doesn't seem to be the best thing at all, it doesn't even seem a remotely good idea.
Why create some shitty app that, essentially, does what the browser already does (and possibly introducing the user to all kinds of bugs that allow them to be hacked, among other things).

i'm basically going to copy the ng login and re-use it :)

Hate to burst your bubble adam but I highly doubt that Rob is going to give you access to Newground's database.

yea when i came up with this idea i knew that would be the case but i just have to work out how to copy the login script into the app because the app is primarily HTML/JS so it should not be that hard

but it can wait

You do realize that's not going to work.

Surely it can work? Just pass the same variables to /ajax/login.php that the JavaScript passes when you click login? Doesn't need intervention from rob/liljim, unless they check who/where passed the information.

It is my understanding that Ajax does not work cross-server.

Perhaps I didn't word that right.

An Ajax request will only be successful if it is on the same server as the file you are requesting.

An Ajax request from domain1.com to domain2.com will not be successful.

hmm

i'll create something tomorrow

if they do check, well i'll probably get a few nasty emails :P

but the one thing that they may have, is they may have the server set up so you can log in only from the site, but i doubt it

Yeah, I know that, but you can still communicate with login.php cross domain can't you? :)

Using cURL it should, but with Ajax, without a proxy no.

But just proving your username and password is right doesn't provide you with any more information then you do just parsing NG's html.

Yes, you should be able to do that, unless it has something like
if($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] != 'newgrounds_ip')
{
echo '<h1>You can't see me</h1>';
}

I just tried cURL on my server.

If the password and user name are correct it will return the PM count, user name, and status.

So I guess that would work.

I would not trust any software (including this) that logs in using this method, as it provides a hell of an easy way to steal passwords.

even if you do manage to create a way to have users sign in through this app, with all the recent phishing and brute forcing happening, do you really think users are going to trust this app?

i think you may be better off with the method NGLog uses, just entering the username and having stats pulled from the NG pages.

Exactly. The login idea isn't going to do anything more than cause you to lose potential users.

Yeah, but i am sure you will manage to include buffer overflows in your code and have fun cases in your html/javascript parser where a user could send a specific string which allows them to execute their own code (and thus allowing a attacker to take over the pc).

true but what if i didnt have a full login just have the username and a login button as wreckages said like NGLog then we wouldnt have to worry about phishing because you are not completley logging in so you can view things like your submissions or your medals and you cant edit anything on your userpage or account, thanks guys
