I am about to head to the library and pick up a nice book to read, but I'm really not sure what. There are a good amount of books I have in mind that I've been wanting to read, but I thought I would get some opinions from my favorite bunch of forum dwellers.
Genre doesn't really matter. Sci-fi, fantasy, drama, mystery, anything really. If you've read it, and you loved it, suggest it to me.
Also, if you really want to persuade me into reading a book, you should probably give a little description of why you enjoyed the book or what makes it so great, instead of just posting a list of book titles.
GO!
I've been refurbished and reissued, prepackaged and precooked, decontaminated and deloused, but I still smell, sound, look and feel like shit.

I've heard of it. Is it a comical book, or is it supposed to be more serious? Tell me more about it.

I own and have read Diary and Haunted, but I must admit I didn't really get into either of them that much. Diary especially. Haunted is mostly a compilation of short stories, and some of them were decent.
My friend just got done reading Rant and says it's pretty good, I was more inclined to pick that up. Have you read his other books, besides Fight Club? If so, what did you think about them?

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S. Thompson (if you haven't already read it).
This book is tremendously well-written, and has a great sense of dark humour throughout. It's about two guys who go on a trip to Las Vegas to cover a dune buggy race for the press, but spend the entire trip mashed out of their heads on every substance under the sun.

The Overacheivers by Alexander Robbins. It's about a Journalist that followed the lives of driven kids and discovered the clearly negative effects society pressures children in to overachieving. It's really interesting how crazy these kids get over their grades and by graduation of highschool they realize they don't even know what they want to do with their lives because they spent so much time trying to be the best they don't even know who they are. Some of them even end up hurting themselves but taking drugs and energy drinks in large amounts. All of this is true and incredibly interesting check it out.
IClaudius is a fictional biography. You might not be interested in Roman Emperors but i loved this. Caligula is the nephew of Claudius the emperor. Claudius DID actually exist and he was considered an idiot because of his stuttering and sometimes a little slow. But he was a brilliant historian and while his entire family was slaughtering eachother no one bothered with him because they figured he made no difference. In the end after the death of Caligula he takes over and becomes emperor and then his step son Nero whose mother poisoned Claudius becomes next emperor. It starts off with emperor augustus with Claudius giving his narration of his own life as well and point of view of everything.until his death.

I've just finished reading The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, it's a drama about a boy in post-war germany who has an affair with a woman double his age, who later appears standing trial for war crimes.
It's an amazing book, and it was made into a film last year, Kate Winslett won an oscar for her performance, and it was also nominated for cinematography, director, picture, and more importantly best adapated screenplay.
It's not something I'd normally read, my mum recommended it to me after reading it for her book group, it's a great book and well worth anyone's time. It's quite a light read, and shouldn't push you too hard, but I highly recommend it.

I've read pretty much all of his books. Diary and Lullaby I liked the least. They just seemed a bit more boring than his usual stuff and I just didn't enjoy them as much. Haunted was pretty cool, more shocking than anything. Some of the stories in there stuck with me.
Survivor, Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Choke, and Rant were all really good. I liked them probably in that order. Rant had a real interesting story, and I really liked the ending. I'd recommend it.

Lies My Teacher Told Me, which mostly deals in debunking a lot of things most kids in America learn in History classes from grade school through college. Examples include that the pilgrims relied almost solely on the Indians when they first arrived while teaching nothing in return which goes against the myth that both pilgrims and Indians taught each other different skills when they met or that John Brown wasn't the crazy madman he is portrayed to be. It's more academic than anything, but I thought it was an interesting read.

At the risk of sounding like a nerd.
The Dragonlance Novels.
Main ones are written by Margareit Weis and Tracy Hickman...if they're Dragonlane, but not written by BOTH of these two, then don't...especially Richard A Knaak...he sucks...

Also at the moment I'm reading Sebastian Faulks - Engleby, although I'm not sure how much a dirty american like yourself would be able to appreciate it. It's about a working class kid in a top english uni (think oxbridge) in the 70s.
I would however definitely suggest one of his other books, Birdsong. It's an amazing novel about WWI in several parts, first in 1910 as this young guy engages in an affair with a french woman, then in 1916 during the somme, and a couple of other bits around the place.
Words cant describe how amazing it is. I loved it.

So far I have a list comprised of seven different books. Five of them from suggested ones in this thread, two that I came across while looking up said suggested books. Any more ideas? I will be heading out shortly.
