Newgrounds Writer's Portal? 2009-04-17 22:05:49 Reply

One of the administrators on the Rev share and RSS thread mentioned that there is going to be a writer's portal on Newgrounds. It sounds interesting, but does anyone have any information about it?

Not really, other than it may try to incorporate elements of the NG MAG into it, and that it will come out after the Art Portal. Both are supposed to come out this year, but delays are not impossible.

Presumably writer credits will become enhanced in the Flash Portal, much like how you can give credit to Audio Portal stuff - you'd be able to credit specific writers too.

I'd say delays are probable =P

Also, is that a fact it'll come out after the art portal? I was under the impression that they'd be launched together.

I can't wait to be able to submit my short stories onto NG.

I was under the impression that the Art Portal was already finished and they are now working on the Writers Portal currently along with other bits and bats (HOPEFULLY THE AUDIO PORTAL UPGRADES LOL).

Oh, those evasive audio portal updates...

I, myself, can't wait for the art portal. It's going to be interesting to see how it works.

So would that mean for example, someone posts a script of dialogue and an animator can freely pick it up from the lit portal, then credit the writer similar to crediting an audio artist in his own flash?

Something like that, yeah.

I wonder if I-Bot is gonna become Image Bot, similar to how P-Bot and A-Bot represent the Portal and Audio sections. Is there gonna be a new bot for the writing portal? And what are they gonna use F-Bot for?

So many questions...

I think it's not that bad an idea.
Too many flash animators lack the ability to come up with a decent story to animate.
But there are too many "writers" out there with an idea they want animated without any work.

This would sift out all the crap and reveal the gems (through the voting system), allowing those good writers a better chance at having their work made, and providing animators with something quality to animate if they lack their own ideas.

Giving four front page slots under the audio section would also be a great way to get them some exposure.

The only potential problem is that when stories are, inevitably, far less popular than movies, games, or even audio, the writers will start to demand of the staff and users special privileges despite not returning the same kind of revenue (as some of the audio artists were a few years ago).
For instance, as nice as someone's poetry will be, I doubt more than twelve people on the entire internet will really want to read it (unless it's erotic or about video game characters).

It would be neat to see articles spotlighting NG developments (what the NG Mag originally attempted to do) being regularly published by users again.

I hope that users will not have the ability to vote 5 on their own work every day when nobody else is voting on it (I.E. Audio Portal).

that is no measure of talant

This is just part of the voting system, i think it will problaly just be more of the same old voting pannel's. Though for each new portal i do think it is obvious that There will be a nene voting panel and some other Character in the other. If the user who created the submission can't vote on his submission he could just log out and then vote on it.

What kind of special privileges are you referring to?

What special privileges do flash and audio artists receive?

If you're just talking about $ from the ad revenue sharing system, then... some artists will get more than other, but it doesn't matter what medium it is, that's true for all of them. And yes, you're probably right, there's going to always be less attention paid (and less ad views) for stories in the internet than pictures or video. This applies to sci-fi fanfic, youtube comedies, and porn/erotica alike. People tend to like video > pictures > words. I don't think any writer is going to go into it expecting otherwise.

Like saying a novelist all of a sudden is going to get upset when his new book isn't as famous as the latest big movie. .... what rock was he under for his whole lifetime?

I'm sure it will be filled with copy + pasted or copyrighted work within the first day.

I talked with a staff member about this.

Pretty much the portal will act the exact same way as the Flash/Audio portal, but for writing.

Writers can submit their work and it gets votes towards it and such and if an artist uses the story then they have to add the submitted work under their own name on the left, to credit the writer as everyone does for audio artists right now.

The problem I have with it is that any ol' kid can with stick figure knowledge can take the story and use it.

You probably will be able to add "Only can use with authors premission" onto your writing submission, so that would solve the one problem.

The other problem is that people can take the written submission, modify it by a few scenes or sentences and call it their own.

Yeah, that would be a problem.

Perhaps if the story gets used in a flash (with $) then they can get a cut from it...

To me it seems unfair on musicians to get no a revenue for there work even if used in a flash.

As for the plagiarism, somebody will notice it. If it ever beomes popular (Why steal a BAD story?) Then someone will notice.

You know the Whistle Feature will probably be placed in the Writer's Portal.

Also it is true. I interviewed Tom Fulp myself.

Regarding the Writer's Portal, does anyone know if they'll be a sort of "select genre" option for the author or will the reader have to deduce this him/herself by reading the piece?

I expect the latter. If they don't do it, people will probably be messaging the admins about it anyway, as it'll be torture to try and read determine a genre just by reading it, especially once you consider ratings [mature for porn, etc.]
