That's part of it, but also because food was scarce, and they had the concept of eating enough to keep you satisfied. None of the food was processed, either, so the risk of gaining weight was rather low.

Nowadays, we don't have to worry about surviving anymore due to the comfort of just going to the store, buying what you need for like a week, then eating what's in the fridge when we are hungry.

Or going to Mickey D's for a Quarter Pounder.

There's a simple reason: They didn't have something available to eat 24/7, and of what was available, most of it had 100 calories or less. So they had less calorie intake, added in with greater exercise, and you get less fatness.
