This is a thread for religious people in general. I don't care if you are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or what but you must be a religious person for this discussion to apply. Also, no flame wars please.

So I have noticed that many people have been selling out the views of their religion in order to fit a more moderate profile. Muslims say that Islam is not a violent religion despite verses in the Koran saying the exact opposite. Mormons practiced polygamy until it became illegal, at which point they conveniently believed God told them to stop. Christian denominations have tried to claim that homosexuality is not a sin, despite Old and New Testament evidence otherwise. The list goes on.

So my question is this. Your religion believes fervently in X. X is not a popular view in the current social norm, but X is a definite and undeniable part of your religion. A law is passed that is in direct violation of X (maybe it prohibits X or enables what X opposes). Would you,

1) Sell out your religion. State that your religion does not believe in X and attempt to take a moderate, all encompassing stance to try and draw people to your religion.

or

2) Stand for X. Your religion stand for what it stands for and facts are facts. Defy the law and continue to spread your beliefs and live according to X.

Why do you guys think this will get deleted? It is a legitimate question that I don't think anyone has asked before and it is intelligent in an insightful way. What is wrong with it?

Fundamentalists are dangerous and closed minded people. Just because your religion tells you what to believe it doesn't mean you have to believe it or otherwise you are "selling out your religion". That kind of simple minded generalization is exactly what fucks up everything good about a religion.

Got any specific threads because I don't recall seeing this. Usually, a fundamentalist and a moderate would fight over X in the following manner

Fundamentalist: X
Moderate: No
Fundamentalist: Yes
Moderate: No
Fundamentalist: Yes (points to evidence)
Moderate: *cups ears and shouts "LALALALLALALALLALALALLALALA*

I am trying to extract and put to words the underlying issue here.

Thank you Me-Patch. I will not lie, I disagree with you, but I appreciate your response as it has been the only intelligent one so far. I think others may be angered by the insight, which is probably why they want the thread locked so badly.

Actually, the Bible says that God created man to be with a woman. It says nothing good about homosexuality.

Yes that is kind of the point. The fact is, the Bible says nothing good about homosexuality as you've said. However, there are many "Christians" (if they can be so called) that try to claim some kind of moderate ground and act like it is perfectly Christian to dismiss this belief. You would be surprised how many "Christians" I encounter that support gay marraige. That statement is simply the Christian example of what I am talking about.

People sell out their beliefs in order to make their beliefs more popular, forgetting all the while that the beliefs they want to spread have already been discarded by their own hand.

Thats why no one wants to debate with you. Because you insult the rest of us. Other posts were right, this has been done many times before. Like, i've been year around a year and already i've seen enough religion debates. Theres really nothing particularly different about this one. You're an 05 user, surely you know of NG's adversion to religious topics.

I do not mean to insult the rest of you, what I am frustrated with is the fact that I am asking a genuinely unique and insightful question and have gotten nothing but "Lock this thread now". Recently, there have been better posts, but most (pastafarianism, I stand for old ladies on the bus, etc...) are not even serious.

Yes, I've been on since '05, but unless you can present me with a link to a thread that asks THIS SPECIFIC QUESTION, you cannot claim it has been done before. Not all religion threads are alike. I am not discussing any moral or political point, just a general relgious insight.

And I really don't care about Newground's aversion to relgion topics. In fact, I doubt if that is true...there are like 6 religion topics on the front page of the politics forum right now and never less than 3 at any given point in time.

Please, either take the time to read/reflect/post or leave.
