I've never tried to play online either. I've never even played with someone else before. I always wanted to play with someone on the same team until I got use to the team work style and then try to play it against them.
My favorite is to start a normal game on hard as it will go, build defenses and huge army, and let the other teams beet on themselves until I feel I have a large enough army to take one of the other teams.
Once I take them I then build a base there full of defenses, as many castles, etc.. I make sure there are citizens there and large army just in case something terrible happens to my first base and then I rinse and repeat. until I've taken all of the bases.
My other favorite strategy is to gather all of the relics first to win that way and just build defenses and let the other team kill themselves while holding on for dare life. Sometimes I use the cheats for the supplies, but I only do that at the very beginning of the game and still don't do that often.
