I'm Australian, we measure height in meters but the height of a person in feet and centimeters.

A cup is a quarter of a litre(how simple is that!), all liquids are measured in litres, you can get pints, schooners and middies at the local pub, shots are still in ounces. I don't really think that your system's that bad but there's a reason we converted mostly to metric.

Also from what my parents told me it wasn't hard to convert and made life a lot easier, just took a bit to get used to that you had to half the number when you order at a butcher or you would get twice as much.

Folks I don't know if you've realized but Standard is stupid.

it really is

Really, really stupid.

really really

I honestly have no clue how many cups are in a freaking gallon.

...i know how many grams make an ounce...

Here are valid points:

1. Everyone else uses Metric.
2. Metric is infinetly more simple.
3. Metric makes more sense for measurements of volume/weight/length.
4. Metric is used for academic purposes anyway.
5. Why the hell are there 5,280 feet in a mile? What's so special about 5,280?
6. After taking higher level science classes, (A+P chemistry, Honors physics) I find it extremely difficult to convert back to standard. I'm so used to metric at this point that I'm starting to measure length in kilometers and volume in liters.

Im in the army and now im living in germany and nothing makes sense ove rhere
the weather is like 30-40 cel
but its warm as fuck right now...
people tell me how much they weight or how tall they are and i jsut dont get it yet...
thankyou american public schools for making me look like a big dummy infront of hot german chicks...glad their drunk and dont mind

Anyway, what are you opinons on changing to metric?

I've always thought that we should change to metric, and I honestly don't see why we use standard.

Anyway, what are you opinons on changing to metric?

You have very good points!

Actually even American physics scientists use the metric system, because it's the only way how to calculate most things. That's why SI units have been invented.

Maybe the American government doesnt like the metric system because it has been invented in France in 1791 during the French revolution. Maybe it's like the thinking of traditional conservatives: "everything related to socialism must be bad"

Learning on how to do standard is so hard.

I don't know how Americans can get used to this.

4 quarts in a gallon because it is like quarter and there are 12 inches in a feet and three foot in a yard and...

Yeah, but there are other things about Standard Measurement that you guys don't use:

You say that there are some 5,280 feet in a mile. In Britain, I'd say 1,720 Yards (3 feet to a yard)

You say that you weigh (for example) 185lbs. I'd say 14 Stone, 3lb (14 lbs in a stone)

Now I'll grant you, certain things can benefit from both sides of the argument. I've always measured large distances in imperial - miles and speeds in mph. However, when I get down to smaller stuff, I prefer metric, because base 10 is far easier than all of the bases that you'll be counting in (16th, 8ths and all the rest)

Mililitres and litres are great for fluid, as I've never heard of something so stupid as a cup measure - cups come in different shapes and sizes, so how the hell are you supposed to standardise that?!

The metric system is unfathomably easier than english units. There's only one type of unit for each physical quantity, instead of dozens.

As for the milk in bags, who does that?

Um, people who don't want to manufacture and dispose of a whole jug just to put milk in it?

The USA should change to metric.

You can't be "more American", you both come from the same country. You mean "more Patriotic"

A cup is 118.29 ml, are you thinking of measurement cups or drinking cups, or maybe bra sizes.

Whats metric for D cup?

I usually only use cups in cooking, its easier than metric unless you want to be picky for exact measurements.

2 eggs, 1 cup of water, 2 1/2 cups vegetable oil, etc... but I cant think of a use besides that.

What?

How is 118.29ml not a stupidly picky and exact measurement?

Ever notice how they sell soda in 2 Liter bottles? And all liquids sold in the USA have measurements in metric?

Your granola bars and pop tarts also have metric measurements on them.

I'm pretty sure that most food products except for things from delis have metric measurements, that is to say all packaged foods.

They just change the print on the label to include metric. It's no hassle at all.
