If your self-worth is independent of what people think of you, as you suggest, then what harm is it to tell your age? You can just go on believing you're a mature 13 year old, a popular 20-35 year old, and a very seasoned lover past 35.

Would you like to explain the logic in this? I mean, to me it seems you are just making this information up.

I refuse to tell my age, because there is no reason for anyone to know my age. The only time a person would ever care about my age on the internet is to use it in a flame, and so long as my age is N/A they have a 1:4 chance to successfully guess my age and flame me successfully, and if they get it wrong it leaves me open for a nice counter attack. Besides, I want people to make assumptions about me and draw conclusions based on how I post, not my age.

And i would rather not be pigeon-holed by my age.

So in other words, because you believe there is no stereotype for n/a, you cannot be hurt by it. But because you do believe in the other stereotypes, you can be. Why not just stop believing that the other stereotypes apply? You know yourself better than anyone else anyway.

In a lot of cases thirteen means under thirteen, too. I actually know a twelve year old who set his age to eighteen. Since he's pretty mature and intelligent, a lot of people thought that he was that old, too.

Another thing, you can tell if there lying depending on sign up date. If its older, like 2000, you know there not 13, cause no one knows about it earlier then that (most of the time)

I believe there is a stereotype for N/A, the problem is nobody ever goes out and say "well ur age is n/a!!", as opposed to "u r a 50 year old virgin loser".

Really? Interestingly enough, I have had people try to age stereotype me about 6 times in this site (After a quick check through my PM's, too lazy to go through posts) and nobody has ever guessed the 13-19 bracket, so apparently they don't.

The problem with interaction is that no matter how you act, people will use anything to stereotype you as a means to insult you. For instance, even though you post as n/a, people still try to guess your age. But even if they guess the age correctly, does the stereotype apply?

What happens when the conclusions people draw from you, and not your n/a, are stereotypes? Why wouldn't it? It doesn't matter whether the stereotype applies or not to the average troll, all that matters to them is a simple flame. If I put up N/A, the average troll will either give up there, or they try to guess my age. When they guess wrong, you simply mock them for guessing poorly, and if they guess right, you still mock them for guessing poorly. Either way, I win and they lose.

Of course. In fact, I take it that people think I'm in the older brackets as a compliment, showing that I act mature(ish), type fluently(ish), and don't act like the stereotypical angsty 14-year old that most people picture users with less that 5,000 posts as (Which is probably giving me way to much credit, but who am I to disagree?). If I ever manage to get up to the higher post counts, I'll finally reveal my age, until then I'll continue to be the big fat N/A.
