Well Ng, ive been a little torn between these two options. Which one do you think is better, an acoustic or an electric guitar?

If you're just learning pick up an acoustic. It's harder to play and you don't need an amp. It's better for training your fingers because it requires more pressure.

When you pick up an electric after 6 monts of acoustic it's like butter.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! You got me good.

Guitar, not music?

Accoustic is about twelve times over the better for attracting the opposite sex, really it is.

Soooo if that's a deciding factor...

Wow, it's obvious you don't play you know. And if you do you're some freak ass metal head who just likes to play the same scales up and down the neck.

Without a doubt electric. you just can't beat the think, rich tones you get from blues guitars, or the heavy distortion for metal. You also tend to get much better shapes and designs from electrics, whereas with acoustics generally have one basic shap, with the possibility of a cut-away. Plus, there are so many ways to customize your electric guitar to make it your own (e.g. Custom artwork, your own pick-up selection, body / headstock shape etc.) I'm not saying i have anything against acoustics (they can also sound really nice) but i just prefer electrics.

Plus when it comes to playability, the action that an acoustic has to offer is usualy very stiff, only good for chords and not much else, whereas with and electric the action is a lot smoother, you don't need to press sown as hard, and generally much easier to play. Plus, as acoustics usually come with thickr necks, its harder to slide your hand up and down it (excuse the innuendo).

However, acoustics still have a very nice charming sound to them, calming and peaceful, especially from a well tuned 12-string. I always enjoyed playing my dad's various acoutics when i was younger and still do. But there just isn't anywhere near as much to do with an acoustic as there is to do with an electric, so for that, I'd say I prefer Electrics.

[TL;DR Version] - It's just apples and oranges, They are both good at different things, and it really comes down to a matter of opinion.

I learnt the basics on a classical guitar... (like an acoustic but no dots on the neck, wider neck and nylon strings). Learn the acoustic first, it toughens your fingers up faster and makes progressing to the electric later a lot easier.

Acoustic is much more natural and is good for small performances.
Though Electric can also give a pretty good feeling, I'd start with acoustic definitely.

As much as I love my electric, I always go back to my acoustics, in the end they sound much better.

But in North Korea we weren't aloud these things. We were only aloud to play acoustic guitar. No electricity. We had to work the rice paddies, even though nothing would grow. I came to america to become a big rock star! With electric guitars~!

But seriously. I don't really know why I favor electric over acoustic. It just feels right to me.

If you have the resources, Electric guitars are pretty much the optimal tool for whatever you want to do guitar related.

Acoustics don't have that kind of flexibility.

An electric acoustic however is the best of both worlds.

You can't honestly think you can say one is better than the other. They're practically completely different instruments.

That's retarded. Just because I don't own a gun doesn't mean I can't go out and buy one. Just because I don't get abortions doesn't mean I couldn't go out and be refused one. Just because I don't march on Washington doesn't mean I can't protest.

Stupid logic.

Most people say acoustic is the best choice for learners...and I agree for several reasons:

1) First and foremost, acoustics are much cheaper than electrics, so yeah better if you don't know whether or not you're going to commit.

2) Learning on an acoustic will strengthen your fingers more than an electric. Also, the strings are further apart on acoustics which is useful when you're just starting.

3) You can't really do much theory work with an electric can you? Well I guess you can, but you would feel pretty silly doing it.

Yep, it's a sig allright.

Fuck both of them and get an electric sitar ;)

But in all serious, it just entirely depends on your viewpoint because they're both bloody fantastic types of instrument. Electric - more versatile and easier to play, Acoustic - toughens you up in the long term and sounds nicer.

Acoustic definitely, for the portability factor. If you wanted to take your electric anywhere, you're limited to places with amps. Or you'd have to carry an amp with you.

If you're just starting out, I fully recommend getting a cheap acoustic first.
Firstly, it's cheaper so if you decide it's not for you, it's not the end of the world.
Secondly, it'll strengthen your fingers so if you do decide to turn to playing electric, it'll be easier.
Furthermore, acoustics are good to get the basics of chords and more theoretical and technical things for your first 6 months.
When you think you're starting to get your head round the basics, then it's time to move up to an electric and learn more techniques like bends and proper vibrato.
