So I downloaded the 30 day trial for CS4 Professional a few days ago and I'm loving it so far (definitely increases respect for the work that goes into great flashes). I did have a question though. It seems that the artistic aspect of flash is rather limited. It seems that photoshop would be needed to make something taht not only was animated well but looked great. I was wondering if people could post links to flashes that they thought were incredibly well done "looks" wise and were made in flash. I'm obviously new at it, and wanted to see what the true limits of flash were. Again I'm not talking about well animated, just something that even if you freeze framed it it would look good on its own.

If I buy flash and months from now I'm still enjoying it I may just buy photoshop anyways.

Thanks!

You can't use photoshop to animate.
Click on the flash portal link, then look at the list on the right (the top 50 flashes) and watch/play them. Note particularly Waterlollies for artist skill.
Flash uses vector graphics, not bitmap like photoshop, so of course they will not be on the same level.

It's vector art.

Flash uses vectors, so if you wanted to see a good drawing that could be done in flash, just look up vector art.

As for the flash movie, an obvious one would be the Brackenwood series.

Example of vector art.

I realize that I may have been unclear in my original post. I have the trial for CS4 Flash and am asking about its limits, I don't have photoshop.

I know, I was just pointing out the differences and while you can do better art in general with photoshop, you can't really use that art in an animation.

aaa please go on. It was my impression that you could use photoshop to generate better images which could become either parts of a moving object or could be used to generate sprites. Honestly, if I'm putting my foot in my mouth with misused terminology let me know,...this is my third day doing this :)

You can do this. Export an image file (like JPEG, for example) from Photoshop, or get any digital photograph, then import that image into the Flash library. Place the image on the stage and animate like you would any other object in Flash.

anything can be done in Flash if you're skilled enough.

You could use it to generate sprites, but it's really restrictive. If you draw within Flash, you can be much quicker, and edit more easily. You'll see for yourself if you make some jpegs in whatever drawing program you have (MS Paint if nothing better), and then try to make an animation with it. It's less convenient, and extra detail and level of quality will make it take sooo much longer.

It can be a good idea to do an image in Ps to use as one freeze frame in your animation. Luis does that sometimes.
