ARGH !!! someone made it before me...
I wanted to do a thread like this... eh well, I'll post then what I had on the list.

MDrummer
MDrummer is a highly sophisticated percussion workstation which combines features of all of current products on the market into one single instrument.

"VST plugin & standalone application, incredible sound and rhythm systems provide everything you could ever need! Not just a sampler, not just a synthesizer, not just a loop player... It is more versatile than you could ever imagine! It can play acoustic jazz swing with brushes, bossa nova, pop, r'n'b, hip-hop, drum'n'bass... If you can imagine it, MDrummer can play it."
- 4.5GB in 500+ multisamples (Gretsch Birch and Sonor S-Class drumsets played with sticks, mallets, floppy, brushes and hands)
- 150+ drumsets
- 50+ drumset components to generate your own unique drumsets
- 200+ rhythms
- 100+ base-rhythms useful to help you generate your own unique rhythms

Blue Noise Drums
Probably the the best FREE drum sampler, is a drumplugin very much the same as BFD and EZdrummer.
It has outputs for each drum, overheads and ambience mics so you can add compressors and eq's as you like.
In fact that is the best way to approach this plugin since it is made out of raw 24 bit files throught micpres of a Ludwig drumset.

DSK Plugins have also some drums, not the best but at least free, and with the right effects, you might get quite god results.

DSK DrumZ AkoustiK
Acoustic drums module
- 8 sound slots (C3 to C4 white keys)
- Level and pan control
- Master amp. envelope (ADSR)
- 8 stereo outs
- 85 hig quality samples
- 4 full kits + extra sounds
- Midi automation
- Velocity response
- Preset selector

What I dislike about:
- can not use external samples
- made with synth edit and because of that you might experience some troubles with several DAWs (well, I used it under FL and Mu.Lab and not had any poblem)

GTG Synths have a lot of interesting stuff there, including a quite good drum sampler.
GTG DrumSampler II. 10 sample slots.Visual feedback on note input. Integrated reverb unit. Indiviual volume, pan, pitch and reverb controls. Comes with one set of drum samples.
- Pads playable by mouse.
- Individual reverb send.
- Auto-mute group.
- Visual response.
- Logical layout, GM compatible.

The interesting part (at least to me) is that you can add your own samples, and if you don't have samples, you can download some very good drum samples, royalty free from HERE

Your link is not working, but if you were talking about Blue Noise Drums, my econd post here was about those.

Here we go with another useful plugin:
Yellow Tools Independence Free
Coming as VST, AU and standalone application, is a powerful sampler with multi layering capabilities, internal mixer, effects and tons of samples (in separate packages due to the size).

Independence Free 2.0
Well, downloading it requires to be a registered user, after this you'll get version 1.5 and access to download page.
Then you have to download Key Manager and crap... and still not working, not finding libraries... key manager not finding the program, short story, GLITCHES ON TOP OF GLITCHES !

When I was just about to quit, uninstal and write some bad swearing words about it here, I've finally seen:
"Independence Free 2.0.0 comes as a new installation of all components beside the Sound Library. This part has to get downloaded and installed separately."

so, yeah, MY FAULT
After installing the vs2 and downloading libraries I got myself some wicked sampler, with several acoustic and electronic drums.
It's a big resource eater, the controls are a little bit "fuzzy" but it's a good program, definitely a keeper.

Came across interesting things today, so, I'll post here, maybe is useful for some people.
Super DrumFX, a drum sampler by Denis Eismann.
The SDFX is freeware and was mainly designed for use with an electronic drum set but works as well by MIDI keyboards or DAWs.
CPU and memory friendly, SDFX required for most drum sounds just two sample layer to achieve a natural drum sound. You can make your own sample based drum sets and play it by e-drum or DAW.

I tend to stay away from ROMplers or drumsynth's while I'm making my drums. Then again, I'm not an old person who has just made the switch from hardware to software.

I use samples, as you can find a hell of a lot more individual samples then you can samples embedded in a rompler, although some sample packs I like are VEC, TE-LK, Cool, and then I'll use some scrap individually distributed single samples.

I've used that before. I suppose it was decent for being free, but still not "the best".

My favorite singer/actor is Miley Cyrus. What are you going to do about it?

Those are good, but we're talking about free ones ;)

Also, either if you like or dislike samples, sampling drums is probably the easiest way to get natural sound.

Putting percussion on your tracks add more flavor to your music, especially when you put some ethnic percussions.
For people who don't play the real instruments is quite a challenge to know how to do those... all the "mute" notes and accents, especially when comes to ethnic percussion, especially when those have quite strict stylistic rules (like Egyptian music, Turkish or Indian).
For that came very in handy HTP DARBUKATOR Lite FREE.
Separately you can download also 18 MIDI patterns with full loop control
For personal and commercial use.
This instrument features:
-Darbukator engine free style player
-4 different styles (single instrument)
-Doholla - Jerk
-Doff - Rumba
-Darbuka - Nubian
-Riq (Tambourine) - wedding
I tried it, sounds very good but the controls can be very "blurry". It have a MIDI channel for triggering loops(16) and also a MIDI channel for using instruments separately (5).

The last post from me, at least for a while, because I see that is no feedback (so probably not needed) and I'm the only one willing to share & help.

People were complaining about the fact that here are posted mostly samplers/ romplers for drums, so, here are some physically modeled drums:
Cylinder
A waveguide drum model as shown on GUI.
Note that high feedback settings can exceed unity which can be employed for timbre or overload. Always use a limiter and low monitor levels when patching!

and a similar one:
Snare
Cylinder33 with 4 'snare' vectors. This low number is closer to a gut snare (by example Tabor) than modern snares, both may have similar damping dynamics.

both by xoxos
Check that page, there are more freebies but also some commercial software.

Not sure if this fits in exactly with the thread since I believe it's only samples, but G&S Custom Work Drum Kit Sample Library 1.0. They have mapping downloads for Battery, Kontakt and DR-008.

I haven't tried them yet, but have heard good things about them. I started the download once but my internet connection died on me.

I remember a program from back in the day called Hammerhead. Has anyone heard of this or used it? From what I remember it was a pretty decent program, but features were very limited.

That is not a VST, it's a standalone drum sequencer, quite good but very old.
You'll find link and description in the sticky under Audio Software: Studios & Editors.

Hey Soro, I'm downloading the MDrummer free version now.
I'm currently just looking for a good snare sound for a House track I'm working on, but I'll be wanting something I can use in the future. If I can't find or make what I'm looking for with the free version, is it worth getting the larger one? Thanks!

Beware, M Drummer is more like a drummer than a drum sampler.
Keyboard keys trigger rhythms not notes, rhythms you can write yourself, quite in a complicate way.
The sound is very nice and have several drum sets with layered instruments (by velocity).
If you want to hear it how fit in a mix, I made a track using it.

to me sounds quite realistic.

Ah right, that's not the type of sound I'm looking for really.
I've just hit a brick wall where I just need the snare really to set off my track completely, but that's the one thing I can't find. I'll keep searching. Thanks man!
