I plagiarized the hook to my senior thesis (a 15 page paper and a requirement of graduation at my high school) and I'm wondering if anyone knows from personal experience if teachers/administrators actually check thesis papers for this kind of thing.
Is there some sort of scanner that they run papers through to check for plagiarism, I don't really want to get caught for it because I would be suspended probably but I don't think they will be able to tell from just looking at it.

There are programs which lecturers use in University which can check work to see if it has been plaigarised.
Do they use it in high schools? No idea.

Hah you're probably going to be fine. Usually teachers have hundreds of papers to grade and checkin for that every time would be a waste of time and money. Although, if your paper is out of the norm of what you usually write, they might go into some research. What high school do you go to if you don't mind me asking?

Yes they do. They run in a few keywords to see if anything comes up. If nothing does, then they usually google whole sentences.

I do believe they have some program where they can check the internet, but not other papers, those are manual.
Speaking of checking for plagiarism, every summer, the AP English classes have an assignment. Last Summer, we had to read 1984, and write about an aspect of it, i chose surveillance. Well, one of the main parts of the book is when people have to decided to sell out their friends to stay safe. On the first day of school, the teacher took ALL of the paper in a stack. He said there a few plagiarized papers in here. He handed us all a slip of paper and said, "If you know who they are, write their name on the paper, it is completely anonymous." So people sit there and we eventually hand them back in. Then he suddenly starts talking about 1984, how this was relevant. It was SO funny. But me and my best friend new what he was doing.

My College used Turnitin (it was integreted with Moodle) - that thing was a bastard, it even found plaigirism in peoples OWN WORK.

Probably due to quotes from other people's work. It doesn't consider those quotes, and marks them as plagiarized (or so my teacher says).

lol I had someone in my writing composition class plagiarize most of the year and got caught for doing it in the final exam that was an essay. He copied all of it from the internet, it sure shows how much that teacher really checked. lol

Man, theres a thing called a "Bibliography"
All they need to do is look at it and go to those internet sites and bingo.
and even if you dont hand in a bibliography it wont take much to just look on the internet and find a site exactly like yours its preety easy, teachers have brains you know.........

Our teacher just stopped using it because it kept finding quotes every single time.

Our school used to use turnitin.com Some stuff came back as plagiarised when it wasn't, but teachers were aware of things like small passages being fairly common and weren't total douchebags about it.

My school uses turnitin.com, which is an excellent way to make sure that you don't plagiarize. If your teacher puts your senior paper through that website, then your graduation could be in serious jeopardy.

It's not plagiarism if you credit where you got it from and just integrate it to your own ideas. Also should depend on the class, but yeah some teachers are pretty damn strict about this stuff.

Well, college professors steal stuff from students all the time, so the rule is useless.

Well if you're in High School, you shouldn't worry much. Most High School teachers don't check if you stole anything. However if you're in college then chances are you'll be expelled.
HAVE A NICE DAY!

There's no special scanner or anything, I don't think, but my best guess would be that most teachers check for plagiarism if they have reason to suspect it. Is the line that you stole something that you feasibly could have written yourself? Or is it completely at another level from everything else you've written, or out of sync with the rest of the paper?
P.S. Don't plagiarize, kids.

That thing is horrible. My college used it as well and the teachers/lecturers use it at pretty much every uni. In short, if it isn't your own work, you're well and truly in the shit. And most of the people at uni have been teaching for a long time so they know every source and what the wikipedia pages look like so there's no way of smart arsing your way around it.

Teachers scan your paper with their eyes. They can tell if your paper is even slightly plaigerized, just like they can sniff out cheaters and liars.
