Me and a friend have been bored the past week and have come up with a fun sidescroller about killing zombies. It's not something I'm going to work on all the time but meh, I thought I might get some feedback. It has glitches, ignore those, or post if you like, all I really want is constructive criticism, some comments on cool physics stuff I've done so yeah. Below is a screenie.

Zombie Game

Controls:
A and D, move left/right
W, jump
E, swap weapons when icon comes on screen (only one swappable weapon thus far)
F, throw grenades
SPACE, pause
Mouse, aim/shoot

Test my fun zombie game..thing :P

Pretty good so far, seems solid.

I'd play with the character movement though, make it so it isn't so much like.. when you move you're already at top speed. Add friction to the ground, etc, maybe more animations. It's funner when the character feels like an actual person moving around rather than a block, for lack of a better explanation.

More zombies maybe, with different personalities? Some limp around, others run at you on sight, etc.

It's going to need a little extra something too to set it above all the other generic zombie shooters.

Bug:

I was playing through Firefox in OSX and pressing the mouse didn't fire the weapon.

Other than that, good start!

I really like the main character, maybe play around with his run cycle a bit but other than that he looks really good.

If you're using

if (Key.isDown(1)){
 blablabla;
}

for registering mouse clicks, that doesn't work on Macs.

Care to enlighten me on what it is?
Heh, I didn't even know there was a difference between the mouse click on PCs and MACs.

Well, one of the things you could fix is the character doesn't... um... die.

I like how he bounces off the spikes, it's a good way to regulate the damage. The spikes themselves could be organized a little better. If you create a copy of an object, by holding down the shift button you can make sure it doesn't move up or down while you adjust it horizontally. Or, you can hold shift and use the arrow keys. Or, if you want to be really precise, find out how wide the symbol is, then change the x coordinate of the copy to (width) +/- the original. It'll just look cleaner.

The controls seem pretty solid to me. But one thing that bothered me was the repeated jumping when I held down the "w" key (it's a common mistake in flash games). It can be easily fixed by adding another boolean variable that becomes true if a person has jumped AND still has their finger on the jump key. Use this variable in your jump condition to add some more control for the player.

Other then that, I don't see too much wrong with it. Everything seems to move just fine and the UI didn't bug out on me so I'd say you've taken a few steps in the right direction. Keep it up!

How did you learn to do that?

I like the cartooney style
but the blurred blood effect is bad :/
You should add some more gore and also draw the blood with the same style as everything else in the game.

It would be nice if there wasn't so much lateral movement of the character when you switch the direction he's facing. Maybe if you set his origin point to the middle instead of the corner so that way when you flip his xScale it will keep him in the same spot.

Main character is drawn really well... and does the quality really need to be set to low?

It's very fun. A bit of constructive criticism:

- Sub-machine gun bullets should be smaller.
- I don't dig the walls and how they're drawn. Just looks a bit amateur.
- Make it a tad faster.

I love the little messages that pop up whenever you shoot a zombie. Keep it up.

Wow, a lot more people replied than I expected.

I haven't gotten around to doing a death animation and stuff yet...but eventually he will

Many, many years of practice, boredom, and energy drinks.

but the blurred blood effect is bad :/ - Moltimert

Noted, I shall see and have a look at changing my blood effects and see how it turns out.

Yeah, I will fix this eventually. I had some issues early on with some stuff because of this. But I'll take a second look and try and fix some stuff. I've noticed this as well and have wanted to fix it, but yeah, thanks for the comment.

The bullets will probably eventually be invisible, I just have them displayed while I do my development stuff, and it will just rely on the player knowing where the bullet will go rather than seeing the bullet itself. I don't really like seeing the bullets so that's the way it will probably be.
Hmm, the walls, I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I might change the textures and stuff around a little bit.
It will be faster paced when I make more enemy types.
Oh and for the quality, its on low because my computer sucks...and lags when testing, so it helps me...

Thanks for all the feedback. Personally my favourite thing is the physics on the limbs flying from grenades hitting the zombies. I love seeing them explode out and interact with the environment.
Anyway, keep giving me responses if you feel like it, but I'm off to add more stuff. There's a few new weapons and tweaks right now, so I'll upload a new version when I feel it is a significant enough change.
Thanks all!

Interesting, but (and I'm probably just dumb) I wasn't able to swap weapons. I noticed several icons littered about the screen, but I couldn't do anything with them :(

I'm assuming that options/quit all that hasn't been programmed yet? Also, my mouse cursor completely disappeared when I paused the game.

So far, though, I do like it!

Well, I uploaded a newer version of this so a mate on msn could play it to see some new cool stuff so I thought I might as well add a link to the updated version here. So yeah, check it out if you want. There's a bunch of improvements, new weapons, additions, etc.
Zombie Game
There's now something called the weapon locker which holds weapons to exchange, just drag a weapon to the 3 weapon slots displayed and they'll switch. Also the initial screen is just a 'menu' with a timer on it. Just hit the ^ button to go to the test level. There are only 2 and stuff so check it out.
