Anyways, I've played a few games with medals to smack some boredom again. Even though I fell from the graces of the top 50 (and I was there for a long time), I'll try to get there again, if only for a week.
That seems to be the norm for most any curve involving player dedication and/or skill.
For example, in League of Legends, when people begin to play ranked matches, they start at the default elo level of 1200. The max elo currently is 2150+ or thereabouts. Even though 1200 seems to be the midway point between max elo and 0, it's actually the 87.5th percentile of all players, meaning only 12.5% of players that have participated in ranked matches are most likely better than you. 1300 elo is the 95th percentile.
