School Attack Story

Anyone following our forums or the NG Tweets already knows, but this past week, Rig, deckheadtottie and fellow NG users thwarted a potential school attack!

You can read all about it on Rig's page, including a timeline of events, press coverage and links to Flash parodies already posted here on NG.

The latest is this NY Times article, which landed on the front page of the Digg Bubble and scored plenty of snarky comments from Diggers who didn't know NG still exists.

While it's awesome that NG folks were heroic in the face of a possible school attack, this is a bittersweet tale because it involves one of our own. Sirtom93 has been around NG for a few years now and made a brief appearance at the recent London Meetup. Meetup folks are like family, so it's sad to see Sirtom93 get himself into this mess. If he was joking around, hopefully he's learned a valuable lesson. If he wasn't, hopefully he'll get the help he needs.

When I saw the thread that morning I really thought that it was a joke, but when I heard about the news articles I was shocked that it was real, especially since (bar from some of his recent activity) sirtom seemed like a decent person.

You're right Tom it is bittersweet because one of our user would do such a heinous act but you have to look at the positive and see that several users will not tolerate such an act.

I was really shocked as well, seeing as him and I modded the Snubbyland forums for a good year and he seemed pretty level headed person, well, besides his intense obsession with communism.

it surprised me that someone did that. it didn't surprise me that someone threatened to light his school on fire, as i live in colorado, but it shocked me that someone would be so open about it online. i guess people don't really think about what they put online and how it can come back to haunt them.

My parents saw that on the news a few days ago and gave me heck for poking around this 'controversial website'. It's sad how our image hasn't improved much with the general public, with stuff like this, the Torture Game 2 controversy and the generally bad press we get.

It's really great how our users stopped an attack on a school, it shows a lot about the greater part of the community here.

Same here, I never expected the explosion of media attention. I guess an internet story with a GOOD ending is hard to come by these days.

I thought the same. Animations should be the sole description of this website not a "technology" website, not a "social networking" site and definitely not "Facebook" as the media blatantly labelled it.
