The only thing we have to go on is the news story and the accounts of the people who actually know him, and unless you want to call the credibility and the credibility of the BBC into question, we're going to have accept the fact that this kid really did get hauled into custody for the British equivalent of 5150.
And just so you know, the staff of Newgrounds.com has always taken threats like this seriously. The moderation staff is not here for the hell of it, we take time out of our day (volunteer basis) to come here and clean the place up and keep an eye on things because we don't want to see the site closed down or the admin team hauled in by the Secret Service or any other government agency for hosting questionable material.
Just because we don't parade around the bbs using "anonymous" as our screen tag doesn't mean we won't turn on you in to the proper authorities in a heartbeat like the real members of anonymous would.

This is the third time I heard of someone threathening to kill people at a school since the incident in Germany with Tim Schlemleck or whatever he´s name was. That happened somewhere last week or two weeks ago if I remember it well.
It almost seems to become some sort of new trend among younger people, to make threats like that on youtube and sites like this. So I think it´s good that people take it so seriously, to prevent this from actually becoming a new trend.
Also, to be honest I do laugh a bit at that they almost immediatly get arrested. Or get lifted from their beds at 4:00 AM along with rest of his neighbourhood because they couldn´t find the right house (which is what happened here recently :p). They probably thought it was cool to make threats on the internet or something, but they must be the biggest douchebags of their neighbourhoods now :p

When I saw the thread I thought, "surely this is a joke, the staff would never let a thread like this remain open if it were real."
Well guess what. It was.

Actually , they interviewed JP Neufeld of Montreal, the guy from Newgrounds who contacted police in England. It was on the front page of MSN today...so it's probably in most other publications as well.
They also mentioned Newgrounder 'deathhead tottie'
They even got it right that he spotted the post with the threat on Newgrounds, a web site dedicated to sharing music & home made animation...not some other web community.
Dante...The youth only identified as TB , & he's being held under the U.K's Mental Health Act.

Tis not a coincidence that fame rhymes with shame.
What's funny is to my knowledge he did not have anything but the gas tank? Did he have any guns? Or anything?

The reports around indicate he had a knife in his posession too. I'm not sure where you are, so I don't know whether to go on about the British stance on knives as of 2009. They're not on the same level as guns maybe, but there are constant debates on whether people can truly be in posession of knives outside the home, whether it's easy to define attack or defense when using a knife against a person or not. Anyway, that's probably not relevant for this case. It's in the spotlight when a knife is clearly used, and that's when the media and other groups will highlight it. Otherwise, I hear he just had some matches for the petrol.
How important the knife is itself is a personal interpretation of the situation for now. It will still be going down as evidence possibly. I don't know how these law-majiggys work.
Source: BBC. As far as I've read, other articles say the same. I don't want to go through and link them now The links are dashed around the BBS though!

Haha, the sick side of me now wishes he had gotten to school and made a scene. Because, honestly, you know he wouldn't have been able to do shit with just a knife and a can of gas.
Hahahaha.
it's not funny jack you are RUINING your argument with this attitude
Oh well.
So he got a mental disorder thingy? He's going to go into a clinic and what not? Hopefully? I hope they don't put him in jail that would be the worst thing they could do to him.

He also had matches. You can do plenty of shit with matches and a can of gas.

If they put him in jail he will come out and do the same thing again if given the chance. I think they should put him in a mental health facility for a while.

I think that there are a lot of fucked up people out there, but I doubt that he is one of them. NG members provoked him, we won't know, however, it could have been a joke at the beginning. Then we pissed him off. People like him ruin Newgrounds.

This made me think...Do most people not take stuff seriously enough?
Not on the internet. People usually act so differently than what they would face to face. How many people do you know that would square up to people older than them (and considerably tougher) in person?
So the one serious article in thousands will be received with distrust.
Most people in that thread replied saying "haha i doubt hell do it" or something encouraging that to happen because they thought it was a joke. It turned out not to be a joke and they might have been the ones to convince him to do it.
Again, back to my first comment. This was probably for the joke side, "If I can provoke him I'll be funny" mentality.
I seriously don't think anyone really does want him to kill people, but the internet's social boundaries are very blurred.
Most people who I have talked to that have talked to sirtom said that he was very impressionable and that he probably wasn't actually planning on doing it and was just posting it to enlarge his e-penis. So that makes me think that maybe its at the fault of newgrounders for not being serious enough and encouraging it to happen when it was a serious threat.
Really can't say that, you're running the same logic as most video game fearmongerers do.
He posted it in the first place, which shows to me that the thoughts to perform said act where conjured off his own back. Plus he had a picture of a full (to our knowledge) gas can to commit said act. I think this show's intention prior to "e-peen stroking".
There's many throw aside comments placed on here, many a times when relationship advice is asked for the reply "rape her" is given. Do we take these seriously?
It's completely dependant on the individual, not the supposed influential material.
Sirtom was probably just craving attention and trying to get popular by threatening to do something to his school and we encouraged him. Luckily Rig and deckheadtottie took it seriously and called the cops or people may have died and newgrounds would have gotten an even worse rep.
The same as someone threatens suicide, but allows themself to be stopped.
If he really wanted to do it, he would have done without telling anybody.
Yes kudos to Rig etc, but no-one would have died; if you notice the time he was arrested and the time he said he was going to burn down the school has a +4 hour variance. If he really intended to he had plenty of time to do so in the police reaction period.
What we have is someone arrested for trying to act clever, and in the unlikely event of him actually doing it NG's reputation wouldn't be harmed. It has been home to many an incident with its members, but yet it flourishes.
So, do you guys think we should take threats more seriously?
I think it depends entirely on the threat.

Well, we dont know if people are kidding about this kind of shit or not. I dont feel like taking any chances with people's lives, so yea I would take it seriously (no matter how much of a joke it seems).
I mean, if you read a threat of a school shooting, fail to report it, and it goes down; you would be just as responsible for those many deaths as the shooters (and you would be forever known as the one guy who could have prevented the tragedy and saved countless lives...).

Honestly, I don't see where anybody can say "we shouldn't care" because in the end you DON'T KNOW. You don't know if it's a joke, if it's serious, or what. Even if it's a joke you know what? Only a fucking dumbass sicky jokes about murdering people. It's not funny, it's disgusting and it's stupid and whatever kind of penalties he gets are richly deserved. I'm glad and proud that so many people took this seriously. Whether he was serious or not, justice was done, and the bastard got what he deserved and hopefully it'll serve as an example to anybody else who wants to prank about that shit and to people who might not take it seriously. If somebody talks about hurting themselves or others, it should ALWAYS be taken at face value unless you can 100% confirm that the person is just full of it.

After seeing what happened here I agree with you. Even if you think the threat is a joke you should take it seriously because you don't know for sure if they are going to follow through with it.
If I would of seen the thread in General I probably would of thought he was joking and joked about it, which I'm glad I didn't do now.
