What episode are you talking about? The one where he plays golf with OJ? Before the show started they ran a thing talking about the fact that the show was "lost"... it was originally suppose to air a few years ago. But it sucked so they never showed it... until now.
So since that episode, they've made a few more seasons which obviously didn't suck meaning it's not going to get cancelled.
Although I wish every channel but fox would cancel it... it's annoying to find that it's on 100 times a day.

I personally love watching Family Guy when I need a few cheap laughs. And it's an easy way to attract my friends, "Oh hey, is this Family Guy? I love this generic animated comedy!"
They have one bad show and every freaks the hell out.... Chill the eff out.
I OFFICIALLY gave up last week after the "Family Gay" episode because it was SO unfunny. I watched little snip-its of this week's episode and knew it was a good choice to tune out... I don't get it, The Simpsons suddenly over the last few months have been getting HORRIBLE viewership (The worst ever) with actually decent episodes... But FAMILY GUY has been a ratings GOLDMINE with awful episodes!
Bah, I just don't understand the world anymore!
Also, if Family Guy were canceled TODAY, they would still have at least 20 episodes held-over from Season 6 and Season 7...

The jokes just happen to be way too shitty after S4, everything since then has gone down hill sadly, I'd rather watch Tim and Eric(awesome show!!) or Robot chicken which actually both have no plot lines like most comedies but they actually provide some better entertainment.

The problem is the same as every other comedy.
It begins with general jokes and some originality. But then they make more 'relevant' jokes referring to particular people and places.

Agreed, besides, he's a Supervising Writer too, he has the final say in what goes in an episode or not... That's why all the half-decent episodes of Family Guy from a few months ago got backed up because of the Writer's Strike... Because HE had to authorize them.

I want it to get cancelled desperately. It's a terrible program with nothing but a series of crap sight gags and "references".
