Hi, i'm getting CS3 master creative suite for my birthday off my friend, but i don't know if i'm missing out on alot. Is CS4 worth the wait? Is there more useful features in things or is it pretty much same shit different anus?
I have slow internet so i cant even download the whole thing as a crack without leaving my computer on for 3 days. So yeah, is it worth the wait?
pokefanatics! Your attention please! Walren is frighteningly similar to the painting 'Great wave of Kanagawa'
Look it up!

Haven't tried CS4 but CS3 should be more than adequate for your needs. Also, I'm sincerely hoping that wasn't a reference to pirating, which as you should know is a bannable offence

I'm amazed by how many people tout Flash 8 and AS2 in general on these forums. I have to chock it up to people being too scared or lazy to learn AS3, since any programmer, that doesn't only do Flash, will tell you that it's better in every respect. So my point is this, who in their right mind should believe that four years worth of updates and addons to Flash are just not worth it? That's like telling me that you work in Photoshop 6, because it's just sooo much better than any of the Creative Suite versions.

Get CS4, and think of it this way. When CS5 comes out, you'll only be one version behind instead of two (or four if you follow evan).

I use Flash CS3 personally and as far as i know CS4's just a lot harder to use and if you wanna collaborate with a lot of people, most are using Flash 8 and it makes it all a lot easier

Flash CS4 rocks!
The bone tool rocks!
Seriously, all you gotta do is bone your characters, and you have up to 10 minutes of incredible smooth awesome animation, finished in like one week. It's all in the bone tool man, all in the bone tool...

I'm not talking about the programming language; AS3 is fine. It's just that think the layout and the new feel are just really strange.
and also, just because something has been worked on a lot doesn't mean it's good. just look at Windows Vista and the MacBook Air.

Windows Vista isn't that bad, ever heard of the Mojave experiment ?
It does use a lot of resources, but it's not like your average home computer doesn't have them.

The layout may be strange to someone used the Macromedia side, but it's just Flash "Adobefied". If you've ever worked with Photoshop or Illustrator it's super easy to figure out.
Plus, working in Flash 8, you miss out on so many great engines and APIs like box2d and papervision.

Haha, Flash 8 doesn't have AS3. Flash CS3 was the first Flash version to be released with the AS3 update.
Dumb much? :P Lol I'm kidding. Probably a spelling mistake or something :D
/off-topic: Weh hey my first post! I think :D

Not true. If you use Flash 8, it's harder to lead a collab, because you can't open CS3 files. On the other hand, you can open Flash 8 files in CS3.
In response to the AS2-vs-AS3 debate, I prefer AS3, but AS2 is definitely easier. That's what Flash is ultimately for, ease of use. Otherwise, we'd all be using Java or Python. For the record, I use Java and Python from time to time, and they're both better than AS3.
If you want Flash to be as easy as possible, stick with Flash CS4, because the newest version always has the best toys, and CS4's new features really do help the animators. As for code, you're still using AS3, so CS4's no better than CS3 when it comes to code. I have not used CS4, though, so i can't comment on any improvements made to the debugger or the code hints.
As for security, it doesn't matter what version of Flash you use. You need an obfuscation tool to scramble your code, and I know of no sure way to protect your work completely.
Finally, never use cracked software. There are no exceptions.
If you can't afford Flash, get the open source stuff... or use the Flex SDK?
If you want Maya but can't afford it, Blender's free and gives you pretty much the same features.
Is CS4 better than CS3?
Yes.
Is CS4 worth the wait?
What wait? Are you illegally downloading it? GET A JOB!
Is AS2 better than AS3?
Heck no. It's simpler, perhaps easier to understand, but AS2 is not good for games, and you may as well use AS3 when animating, too.
But I can't figure AS3 out!
I used AS1 for about four years. It was terrible. When I tried using AS2, it was similar, but a lot of old code didn't work the same, so I had to learn a few new things, but it didn't take long, and it was basically AS1 with new features and slight changes. Now, AS3 is a complete overhaul, but you do get used to it if you put in the effort, and it's definitely worth the effort.

AS2 is easier because you can write bad code and have it work. This is not a good thing to practice.

Since Fjgamer mentioned Flex, I thought I'd put my two cents in about it.
After learning the Flex format, I've found it to be the superior way for programmers to create Flash, but there are limitations/extra steps in game development. You'll still need Flash if you want encapsulated 2D animations. You can use png, jpg, gif, or svg files in traditional sprite sequences, but most will find that importing movie clips from swf files is easiest.
Also, the Flex SDK is free, so all you need is a text editor and a command prompt. It's a real programming language from top to bottom, so your code is optimized and has no cross platform or cross browser issues. It takes a little bit of time to get used to the mxml format, but once you do, you'll probably never want to go back to Creative Suite (assuming that you're programming minded).
As for what Fjgamer said about Python and Java: Yes there's more power in those two than in the Flash IDE, but with Flex's ability to perform RESTful calls, it's just as powerful.

well, the thing is that my B-day is coming soon and my friend is offering to give me his LEGIT master creative suit. I have a few options cuz i only really need photoshop and flash;
#1: get CS3 off him and wait to get the cash so i can upgrade.
#2: buy the others on CS4 individually
#3: settle for CS3
That's pretty much it. I always aspired flash animators and artists. This could be my big chance to kick start my carreer in digital art :D
