How To: Make Good Quality Mspaints.

MSPaint is an essential tool to any Newgrounds BBSer. It lets the underprivileged members who cannot afford the luxury of Photoshop to participate in Photoshop threads regardless and try to make us laugh. And sometimes they do.

Unfortunately trying to cut corners comes at a price. When you save your handiwork as a .jpeg the quality of the picture gets bumhumped and gives you something like this. Not good looking at all.

The following method doesn't require a lot of effort to do and the small amount of time you put in will really be worth it in the end.

Step 1

Save your handiwork as a .bmp. Bitmaps store information for every individual pixel and will give you the best quality image. The disadvantage of this is that they take up a lot of storage space, and Newgrounds only accepts .jpeg's or .gif's, so it can't be uploaded in it's current state. We need to change the file format.

Step 2

Bring up the image you wish to reformat in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and click on the disk icon. You will then be asked to make a copy of the image. Click on the drag down menu for the "Save As Type" field and select the type of format you wish to change the image to, and remember to give it a name.

Step 3

That looks much better, doesn't it? Upload your image and be proud. Don't forget to delete the .bmp when you're done to save storage space, unless you wish to edit your base picture further.

Note: it's recommended that you keep hold of the bitmap until you're absolutely satisfied with your work and it has been uploaded to Newgrounds suceesfully. If the filesize is too big to meet the limits, then scale the bitmap down and make another .jpeg copy.

I suppose that would work if you had an interest in gimp initially, but downloading it just to have better quality pictures or doodles seems rather impractical. This method is more accessible and can be done with seconds, and it's worth practicing if you're a General regular because you'll probably find yourself doing this frequently.
