Fav. Teacher and Why? 2009-03-11 10:34:28 Reply

So I'm applying to be a teacher (teaching secondary school biology and general science), and one question I keep being asked in interviews was who my favourite teacher was at school, and why that teacher was so good.

At the moment the entire world seems to want to be a teacher as it is one area where there will always be jobs through this economic downturn, so I want to learn just what pupils like in their teachers so I can have the best possible chance of getting on a course/getting a job.

So two questions:

Who was your favourite teacher? No names, just subject taught and a brief description.

And why were they your favourite teacher? No 'cos she had big boobz', that is one thing I can't possibly replicate! And ideally not because they let you skip class or didn't ever teach you anything. How did they get you interested in the subject and help you learn?

Thanks, and to the younger British members, watch out- I might be teaching you in a couple of years!

He was knowledgeable in the subject he taught, he didn't piss about and was intelligent. I don't give a fuck if you want to be my friend, damn well teach me. Different between 'being a good teacher' and 'being liked by all the pupils'.

I'd have to say that my chemistry teacher back when I was doing GCSEs was a very memorable chap.

Complete and utter asshole, but you did the work. Hoh boy did you do the work, lest you enjoyed being subjected to the humiliation of being yelled at and put down in front of the whole class.

Really knew his stuff, and his dry wit and humour were brilliant. Couldn't stand the man, but he's the best teacher I've ever had because he was just able to teach, and more importantly got us to learn.

It would have to be my 6-8th grade english teacher, Dan Mitchel, from Saint Pauls in North Canton, Ohio. He was the coolest person EVER!! When he was in grade school and high school, he was always getting in trouble for being so bad. Now, he's the funniest teacher ever. He's always telling jokes to us that made us laugh. And, on top of all that, he is the nicest guy you would ever meet.

He was also super smart and could answer anything and eveything I asked. One time I asked him, "Can deth people hear themselve think?" He answered it by saying that if they where born deth then they would reconize the sign language gestures, and if they weren't born deth then they could reconize the mouth movements when they're thinking.

Mr. Mitchel coaches the 7th grade girls basketball and, even though he's a big guy, he is an awesome basketball player. He also is a devout Catholic and always goes to church on Sundays. He never once swore or yelled or said anything mean about anyone. Even though I'm in high school, I still go down to Saint Pauls School to see him if he has any free time.

This is why I choose Dan Mitchel as my favorite teacher.

The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called...

My favorite teacher was either Mr. Cherry or Mrs. payne

Mrs. Payne because of her sense of humor. You'd be doing some definite work in there, and if you tried to goof off or act like tough shit she'd put you down and you'd be subject to humiliation by an old lady. She was sarcastic and smart allecy and she knew her stuff.

Mr. Cherry would often go the extra mile for his students. His study guides were always so very detailed that the only way to fail was to either have some sort of learning disability or to just not study for it. His humor was more clean-cut although he did have some good stories from back in his not so clean youthful days.

Hmmm... so from what I have so far I can conclude that positive traits are:

Being funny
Being very good at my chosen subject (hopefully not a problem)
Being able to maintain discipline, mainly by clever put downs and embarrassing students rather than shouting.
Sexually molesting as many students as possible...

So to go with the first two questions, who was your least favourite teacher and why (again no names required)? I can imagine what some of you have said you liked in a teacher others will dislike (the disciplinary types especially).

Some interesting responses so far (and the predicted stupid ones...), thanks.

There's lots of different factors. One of my best teachers was the one in 6th form who stern enough to get angry at you for not doing work, but also willing to have a laugh sometimes as well. But I'd have fucking despised her if I was just starting school, and I'm sure lots of students wouldn't ever warm to her. Saying that, though, I did have another teacher similar to her in the lower years and she was also a good teacher.
My favourite teacher was a maths teacher, but I love maths, so it was easy to connect with him.

One of my least favourite teachers who everybody else loved was this one who constantly got distracted and told ridiculous (probably made up) stories about his life experiences. He was all anti-authority, "fuck the head of year" kind of shit. So don't do that, unless you want to teach all the lower groups because they think you're a badass.

Teachers that 'show off' or try to be friends with students. There was a teacher I had, if someone was late for a lesson he'd spend at least 20 mins showing off and shouting at them, he'd also try to be everyones friend. I learnt nothing in 3 years, not a single thing. The teacher I mentioned liking; he'd happily help people out, but he was never 'friends' with anyone, everyone was treated the same, he was brilliant.

- Don't try and be friends with the students
- Don't show off to impress the students
- Do be stern, make sure they know they can't mess about without repercussions
- If a student is fucking about, kick them out for 10/20 mins and have them come back in and catch up themselves.
- Do teach well, if a student wants to know more, help them, but don't alienate the students that don't understand.

Being a good teach would be bloody hard, good luck :D

I had a number of teachers myself at school that fell into that trap, and as soon as they become friends with the students they lose all authority. I don't see that being a problem- while I suspect I'll be a touch on the soft side with discipline I really have no interest in showing off to a bunch of kids (he says posting on a website almost entirely populated by teenagers...). In particular there were a couple of shocking female teachers that both taught a subject and coached sport. They became very close to the girls through the sport, and thus were extremely poor teachers for the boys in the school.

I think that is generally true of most things- you have to maintain control or you are lost.

- If a student is fucking about, kick them out for 10/20 mins and have them come back in and catch up themselves.

I'm sure there are other ways to handle it, but not being afraid to punish them is important.

- Do teach well, if a student wants to know more, help them, but don't alienate the students that don't understand.

That really sums it all up- the trick is to engage everyone, not just those that are the best. For me I think that may be the biggest challenge, as obviously I know a great deal about the subject and keeping it at a simple level is now very hard. I can't even remember how simple science lessons were when I was starting secondary school!

Being a good teach would be bloody hard, good luck :D

Thanks, it may be hard, but it is very rewarding and something I am really looking forward to.

My favorite teacher is my History teacher, a guy called Mr.Brandon.

He's my favorite because of...well, his method of teaching just clicks with me, so I learn more. The only problem is that my class is full of the worst kind of scum, who just won't STFU while he's trying to talk. He's a nice guy too, which helps.

I always like it when a teacher says ''I'm not going to shout at you, just don't let it happen again''.

So yeah, give your students a chance before destroying them. Unless they're doing something totally out of order.

I'd say my graphics teacher is my favourite, but since he's forcing my to stay after school to finish my coursework, that automatically makes him Hitler. >:(

I guess my favourite teacher is my biology teacher as he takes no shit and he's also a proper sarcastic bastard. He's always up for a good joke and he'll even play on XBL with his pupils.

My favourite teacher was my Biology teacher. He was just plain better at teaching than all the other ones combined.

He could 'play' with his pupils. By that, I mean he could have fun in the lesson in ways that didn't involve being friends with everyone. I remember one example in particular, where he was explaining how to work out the dry mass of something. Instead of the usual maths-related droning, his explanation was:

" If you took [student's name] here, weighed him, and then threw him in an oven for 24 hours, the bits of bone, hair, and residue left in the oven would be his dry mass."

He said things like this all the time, just to illustrate his points. And it worked very well.

Also of note was his communication skills (very important, but you'll be surprised how many teachers have no ability in this aspect whatsoever). He went out of his way to make his voice itself be as un-ignorable as possible; switching from loud to quiet and back to loud again (and this guy could go VERY loud if he wanted to). Keeping variety in his speech, throughout the lessons, was a simple and effective way of keeping everyone interested in his subject matter (the guy could make just about anything interesting using this technique).

And lastly, he would shout and throw people out of the classroom, but he only ever did it sparingly. Over-using punishments like that is a sure-fire way to lose all respect the class has for you (as some of my other teachers found out). Refraining from doing things like that will make them sink in much more effectively when you do have to use them.

How well did it work overall? Put it this way: he's half the reason I'm doing a Biology degree now. 'Nuff said.

Funny, honest, not patronising or condisending, intelligent, other such qualities. These are all stuff you should expect from a good teacher.

Personally I think bad teachers inspired me more than good ones :P

All the teachers who everyone liked were just the people who were basically goofballs who mostly didn't seem to give a shit.

Those are the highschool teachers you want. Kids are stupid as shit and don't respect people who are lame or controlling. You want to be a cool friendly teacher so they respect you and then when you get mad at them for being a bunch of little stupid shits, they feel ashamed because they've liked you all along and they seek the respect of cool people.

So then they're all like "aaaaaaaaaw we do suck".
