Same concept, though.

That could piss off a few people. That's like saying they use phpBB...or the same concept anyway.

Can someone explain the attraction of these? I don't understand why you would want to have a new window that is not a new window. This is considering it always seems to be slow/buggy.

I have done the deed. Didst thou not hear a noise?

Javascript pop-ups are blocked; a new window for content is silly, in general the content won't fill the screen leaving massive blank areas. With greybox/lightbox/blackybackypoppywoppyup py you're showing the user the content, without having the entire page 'distracting' but you're also not loading an entire new page, which increase server side bandwidth and client side, also people cannot 'direct link' to the content, therefore avoiding actually finding out what it is and exposure for the site.

Done properly, they're excellent. Newgrounds is a good example, but I've heard they're removing it for a better "Click button, content will load in page" solution.

Wouldn't it be better to just ask permission for JavaScript pop ups then? It seems quite silly to have everyone implementing there own overlay.

Your points make sense though, I think its just that I don't like these newfangled boxes. I guess I should just move with the times.

Good old web based fads ;) Here at Newgrounds I used pop-up, because I like to read the latest reviews etc whilst it loads, because I'm too impatient to look @ nothing for 5 seconds.

alright so it looks like i have to use,Lightbox gone wild, for swfs...
i was wondering if anyone has any experiance using lightbox?
i was wanting to use a swf to open a lightbox... so essentially the getURL command would not work... is there a way of using lightbox within a flash document, for example, a flash website?
