Double-Yolked Eggs. 2009-03-10 05:00:11 Reply

Now, I own chickens myself, and Double-Yolked eggs aren't that uncommon, but I find it puzziling that in an article I just read that someone had never seen one before until recently, I was really baffled, then I read the comments, and found some poeple even said that they wouldn't eat an egg with a double-yolk...

Here's the article:

If your mother had two eggs would she fertilise both? If the annnnnnnnsswer is yes. 2x yolk are fine.

I can't say I've named them, we have a good 15 or so, though I do have a personal favouite chicken :)

I haven't named him either, but I loved him when he was a chick and he's a fully-grown rooster now.

No, they're generally quite quiet, the only thing noisy is the neighbours bastard dog...

I have a BACK GARDEN too.

So if you ate them, you'd be eating twins? I'm not sure if that's right or not, but for some reason I'm incredibly horny now...

The pig is getting too big to live here now, it's time for either selling on or being killed, I'm going round today so I'll see what's happening with it, I'm hoping the second option so I can get some free bacon.

Well it's funny you should mention that because I saw my first double yolked egg just last week. I got up, got out the frying pan, turned on the stove, cracked open an egg and imagine my surprise when 2 yolks fell out. I didn't actually know that they existed until then, and I eat eggs fairly regularly. Anyway, I ate it, it was just like having 2 mini eggs, kind of cool actually. But still, I sort of feel bad about depriving a poor mother hen of twins (even though I know the egg was unfertilized).

Yep, it's a sig allright.

I see these all the time, it's surprising more people haven't. It's slightly discomforting when you hard boil an egg only to open it up and find a yolk boob inside waiting to be devoured.

I actually have chickens/pigs/turkeys on my mini-farm too. Though, i've never found a double yolker before. i have had a gelatin egg before.
Its pretty damn funky. Sorta like a water bed.
We never ate it though, mother said it was not meant to be eaten. so, we tossed it in the trash.
It was an interesting find though, to be honest.

When I lived in California, you never saw a double-yolked egg; they were so picky about filtering them out before they ever hit the stores. Now that I'm in Wisconsin, I see them all over the place and when I'm cooking for the family, the double- yolkers are MINE!! I'm not overly crazy about blood spots which we see here from time to time but I will eat them.

Funny you say that because in folklore, an egg with two yolks was said to indicate an imminent death in the family. Also an egg with no yolk is considered very unlucky.

I am pretty sure that a lot of the egg distribution companies just filter those double yolk eggs out with some sort of UV light or whatever.

Lots of food goes to waste every day because it doesn't look right, milk can still be good after the expiration date but some people can't get over the stigma associated with it.

We have chickens that used to lay double yolkers. we use to have a chicken that was half chicken and half pheasant and it layed green eggs. those green eggs were double yolkers too. but one day this rare chicken layed a triple yolker. it was almost the size of a goose egg. but the chicken got killed by a coon.

Yeah, broke it open and 3 yolks came out!!! I believe we rarely ever get a triple yolker. only about 3 times a year. only in the summer.
