Never get a Mac. You WILL get bored of it within a month. No one gives a damn if it's so thin. Why do you want a laptop so thin so it can't fit a bloody CD in it. Macs don't hold as many games, and it isn't very good for business because it doesn't have its own Text Processor. I got a MacBook. £600.... Complete waste of money...

You missed the point of this thread. It is about paying $$$ for a mac instead of a PC. The OP wishes to spend a grand on a macbook when he could easily spend the same amount and reap a computer probably twice as powerful. That is what people are trying ( albeit in a totally insane way sometimes ) to tell the OP.
Either buy a used Mac or a new PC. there should never be a reason to buy a new MAc other than the sole purpose of going, " nah nah i just bought an overpriced computer because i can, enjoy your pork and beans loser. "
If people are passionate about their computing, then so be it. You have every right to express your own feelings, but your way is not the only way. They have the same right to flame and bitch and spread lies if they wish.
I love pork and beans btw, cold out of the can, under an overpass.

Specs to cost ratio is dreadful. If you can live with yourself for shelling out so much for so little then go ahead and buy it. However, I hope you aren't into gaming much. However I must admint that it looks nice and it doesn't take up much room but that is pretty much all the pros.

That and Macs crash about 10% as often as PC's (in my experience - I've owned both.)

If you can afford it yeah sure why not, why are you asking us?
The decision to buy is up to you, why not think about it yourself instead of asking a bunch of jokers on a forum?
Your just bound to start a flame war over Mac vs PC.
Bottom line, a computer is a personal decision, if you want to play lots of awesome games get a PC if you want to make really good movies and such Mac.
If you don't give a shit, garage sale.

are you fucking kidding? I don't know about vista (I can't stand using it) but windows xp runs fine for me, and you could probably get a pc and downgrade to xp for less than you'd pay for a mac.
Sure they have a more games, but you can play most of those games on your X box 360 (I need one of those).
so basically, you should buy an overpriced system that can't do anything but play games and an overpriced computer that can't do anything but shuffle spreadsheets in proprietary formats that nobody actually uses instead of buying a PC?
the only reason I want a windows is because it has some more stuff like pivot and FL studio, but you can use crossover for that
yeah and I'm pretty sure you can emulate osx on a pc. or at least, if you can't it's probably because there's basically no software that's mac-only besides appleworks and other shit like that.
Look me in the eye and say mac are worse than windows, I dare you.
give me your address and buy me a plane ticket.
My entire family uses macs, and they are really good.
my entire family (of spreadsheet shufflers and media processors) uses macs also, except for my dad, who works in network security.

so if I say something that most other people say, it's a bandwagon? OHOHO. maybe other people actually know shit about computers.
of course, maybe it is a bandwagon, but I've used a mac for a few years so I know my shit.

nah I'm pretty sure the point is to be able to bring your shiny new macbook filled with horrible beat poetry to cheap smoke-filled coffee shops while wearing a black turtleneck and playing bongos.

not if you know what you're doing. besides, macs lock up a lot more than PCs do.

Thanks, guys. I've decided to look up installing OSX on my PC, and I found out that my PC would be compatible with one of the hacks, so I'll do that, but being as honest as I am, I'm buying the OSX CD from Apple. I hope it's a good $250, for ilife, final cut pro(my friend has an extra cd he found on the street, he says he'll let me have it), and the eye candy.
I hope this won't be a disappointment.

Wait, I'll try the hack first, if I like it, I'll buy it from Apple.
It's not like apple will sense I have installed it, without ANY networking.

I came here expecting a flamewar and was not dissapointed.
With the few experiences I've had with Macs, the OS is pretty but couldn't handle NG without slowing down. A lot (somehow). But I'm biased, all my family has is a bunch of PCs.

Do you not understand the post, or did you simply neglect to read it? The fact that one computer is more expensive than another is COMPLETELY TANGENTIAL TO THE QUESTION ASKED BY THE TOPICAL POSTER. The poster asked simply, "should I buy X-brand of computer?" to which people replied, "X-brand of computer sucks!" -- But in doing so, these people do not truly know or care that there might be some intangible benefits in terms of productivity through the use of the "opposing" OS by the very nature of its specific user interface, or by other traits that they fail to recognize which are unique to a given brand of computer. This goes in both directions; it's a two-way street.
To ignore a given brand for the sole reason of its cost, or for myths which surround it is a dangerous precedent, and one which, I might add, is growing increasingly popular on these forums as time passes. To dismiss out of hand what others may find useful simply because it does not suit your needs is both incredibly arrogant, and a perfect showcase of the self-righteous and hubristic anger which permeates debates between computer partisans.
The simple fact remains, startlingly clear, and startlingly obvious: A computer is a means to an end, not the end in and of itself. It exists to serve the will of its purchaser, and as long as it carries out this sole duty, to the explicit satisfaction of said purchaser, then it can be defined as a "good" computer. Branding, regardless of what the partisans would have you believe through their incessant warring, does not matter. Price does not matter. Specifications do not matter. It is wrong to argue about things that do not matter; it is morally reprehensible, and in fact, it is counter-productive to human society to do so.
If people are passionate about their computing, then so be it. You have every right to express your own feelings, but your way is not the only way. They have the same right to flame and bitch and spread lies if they wish.
They have the right to do so, but not the moral high ground when they do. They should be ashamed of their actions, as they reflect yet another fundamental flaw in the human character, and they need to know that every minute they waste slinging words across a blackened keyboard is another minute less that humanity has to correct is errant course in a universe which is quickly outpacing it.

Well, if your buying a Mac, be sure to consider that a good chunk of the price comes from the quality of the internal components. Apple designs its machines to be durable, and thusly the buy parts from high end venders who are known for their stability and long life span. This comes at a loss of sheer oomph, though, as anyone who has check out the pricing on a Mac Pro has noticed, shit gets really expensive when you get up into the high performance ranges.
However, Apple hardware's real claim to fame are the circuit boards themselves, which tend to be 2-5 years more sophisticated than what you'd find in an average computer (in fact, the second generation iPod Touch is considered to have one of the most advanced circuit boards on the market today).
In reality, though, how pretty your computers guts are don't count for much in your every day life. If you get a Mac, remember that your options for gaming are very limited, with Blizzard being the biggest name in Mac gaming. However, free, open source games like Cube or Nexuiz are still a blast, and can be run on basically any computer made this decade.
Macs make good "home computers", in that they require little maintenance, have extremely long life spans, and, when used with either the iLife and / or the iWork software suites, can quickly accomplish most everyday computing tasks with speed and style.
In the end, though, it comes down to what you need your computer to do.

Because, if anyone was confused, g0t's opinions are so fantastically important and amazing that it warrants sorting through thousands of posts to find them, instead of him actually getting off his ass and posting them here.
