And I'm not fucking Link.
I'm going through some old CDs today that I don't have on my iPod yet, and I start putting in some Nirvana and Alice In Chains and shit and I'm like "Hell yea, this shit is great." (I remember the day that Nirvana died even... 3 days after Cobain shot himself and every fuckhead in America was suddenly a huge Nirvana fan. Good job, morons, that's why he shot himself, because of people like you.)
So I'm enjoying that. I hear "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins on some commercial at work, so I download some of that. Then I start thinking about all of the music I've bought recently... It's been like, Joy Division, Skinny Puppy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, David Bowie... And that shit is all reeeeeeeally old. And if you know anything about me, it's that I'm feeling really, really old lately. So here's my mission: I'm looking for a new GENRE, not necessarily a band. I'm familiar with crap from Emo and Hardcore and new stuff up to about 2003, but I haven't heard of a new genre coming out in a while. What are the kids into these days? I guess I'm really asking anyone 16-20, if you're younger than that, you don't know shit, and if you're older, you're too old. I'm not looking for some new band to go see to pick up 17 year old girls, I'm just looking for some inspiration here... Anyone wanna throw me a bone?

I'm 21, so I guess that means I'm just barely "too old," huh? From what I know, it seems the kiddies like Hannah Montana a lot. You seem like a Hannah Montana type of guy.

Dream Theater? The metal band from the 80's? I need something that's come out in the past 2-3 years, I'm already fully aware of metal. Or whatever the hell you call Dream Theater.
NEW STUFF.

Progressive Metal, and I'm pretty sure they have released stuff in the past two years.
But whatever, looks like I can't help. New genres aren't the easiest thing to find.

It all kinda sounded like Aphex Twin to me, but I like Aphex anyway... That might help.
Never heard the stuff called Post-Rock, but there's a start... Ok, more anyone?

Good genre. Hammock and God Is An Astronaut are great.
I think teen pop is in these days, with the likes of Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers. Why that is, I'm not sure, as I thought they appealed to the range of 8-12 year olds, but I've seen many teens listen to the garbage.

lol AGAIN, new GENRE... Miley Cyrus is the new bubblegum pop princess and the Jonas Brothers are the newer, possibly even gayer version of Hanson.
I'll look into Hammock and God Is An Astronaut.

I'd advice just grabbing ahold of anything you know absolutely nothing about. That's the way I like the music I sometimes realize I like.

New genre, eh?
As a metal guy, I know alot of metal genres.
Heavy Metal:
Led Zeppelin?
Iron Maiden?
Melodic Black Metal:
Norther
Melodic Death Metal:
Children of Bodom (released new stuff recently)
Folk Metal:
Ensiferum
Other Metal Genres:
Dark Tranquility
Amon Amarth
Arsis
BLACK TIDE (kind of punk metal/power metal)
Dethklok
Firewind
John5
Michael-Angelo Batio (guitar masturbation, literally)
Marty Friedman (old lead guitarist of Megadeth)
Moonsorrow
Pantera?
Scar Symmetry
Skid Row
Wintersun.
Those are some that I would recommend that you may not have heard of.
The ones with question marks are most likely ones you have heard of.
Hope I helped.

For him at least.
I figured Nirvana to Type-O Negative wasn't that big of a jump.
I'd say black metal, but I know he wouldn't give it a REAL chance.

While I honestly appreciate your efforts, I already listen to Black Metal, I know all about Muse and Interpol, I checked that Vampire Weekend thing out, and added them and will probably look into it some more in the future, but I think my point is still being missed. I'm looking for a NEW genre that's come out... Something that's emerged after the *(insert any word of choice)-core* movement. Something that's not just post-othergenre, preferably, but if you look up something like post-hardcore, for example, you get post-hardcorePUNK, which was the real hardcore, and that takes us back 20 years again.
Again, I appreciate the effort, but we're looking for something truly NEW... Please don't answer in terms of something you think I might necessarily LIKE.
I listen to Goth/Industrial/Metal/Punk/Electronica etc., so there's quite a variety, and I'm into a lot more "heavy" than seems to be gathered here. (I'm in a hardcore/horrorpunk band in which almost every song we have is about necrophelia.) I still like this ambient stuff, the Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Locust Toybox, etc. stuff, too.
But again, I need to stress this, and it seems that this might be good for EVERYONE - a truly NEW genre... Trust me, there's always a new one popping up every couple of years, we are DEFINITELY due. It's been about 10 years now.

This. More than anything else that could come to mind. May I suggest a few post-rock bands - This Will Destroy You (highly recommended), Explosions in the Sky (highly recommended), 65daysofstatic, Laura, World's End Girlfriend.

Good stuff. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Curious if you've ever heard of Shoegaze? (ie. Shoegazing). It's somewhat of an older genre though, so perhaps that's out of context.

Mmmk, will take those into consideration

So far I have been. Probably going to see if they have any of this at the "cool" record store downtown in a bit here.

Yes, I've heard of Shoegaze. Thanks though.

After skimming through this kind of music is all I can think of.
This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.

lol that was fun.
I'm starting to wonder if there really HAS been nothing new since before 2000. I'm really ready to write of the 200Xs as one of the worst decades in American history. There was no real cultural or social progress. It's going to be remembered as the "Terror" decade, when we were convinced that a bunch of poor people from the Middle East were going to somehow magically appear on our soil and take over, science was a BAD thing, shitty horror movies run rampant, we learned new reasons to hate gay people, Emo was the most influential musical genre (I've never liked Emo music personally, but that's not my point. It's meant to be depressing, which really seems like a sign of the times)...
Ok, new tangent on the thread, for those who can't think of a new musical genre - what good came out of the 200X's?

That, or that fact he was a depressed anti-social faggot who suffered from severe depression, brought on by his heroin addiction and fear of fame and success. As well as a fear of his music growing old, stale, and boring if he were to live. Newsflash, death didn't stop that from happening.
As for a genre you're looking into, well start from the basics: What do you like, what else to you like, and how the songs make you feel. I really don't know what you're looking for to be exact, are you saying you want to find a genre which either is new to you or is new in general?
The only one that comes to mind right now is the Dark ambient genre, and the band Lustmord. Do not play that guys music in the dark, it feels like you're in Silent Hill. You could also try Gypsy Punk, and Psychobilly both are a bit more well known. There is also classical renditions of modern rock and pop songs which are amazing in all honesty and fall into a genre of their own, but it's nothing new.
Best of luck on your quest, I suggest asking ZeroAsALimit for advice because he listens to EVERYTHING!!!!

Dark Ambient, eh? Whether that's just an update of something or not, I'll take it. That sounds semi-newish. I've heard a little Gypsy Punk, and I listen to a lot of Psychobilly. But thanks for Lustmord, I'll be looking for that today, too.

Much better prescriptions there, if you jump onto black metal on the wrong place you'll probably receive a lifelong traumatical experience and never return to this underrated genre, so pick wisely. The majority of bands within it, IMHO, suck, so people don't get the right picture of black metal, there are a good deal of great bands few people know about though . . .

Even though you consider me 'too old' have you checked into anything Silverchair has done lately? Diorama is one of my favorite CDs and it seems to be the type of stuff you enjoy. I promise, it doesn't sound anything like the days of Frogstomp.
It turns out the "Nirvana Wannabes" are actually really fucking talented.
