There are more English speaking asian people than there are English speaking English people.
What I'm about to say is relevant to that.
People would think that because there are so many Asian English-speakers due to the mandatory English courses in most schools in Asia that it would be best to force English courses in all schools.
But coming from people who teach English in Japan, and from some American foreign-exchange students in Japan, the English curriculum is worthless in terms of helping build English conversational skills, some of the teachers don't even know the language well enough to be teaching it, and a lot of the students don't take in the process, but just memorize the answers because they don't care about how well they do with English but about how well they do in English class.
...Just like almost all 2nd language courses.
