There´s no need to have multiple languages, everything would be much more simple if english was the only one. Everybody would understand eachother, and i wouldn´t have to study bullshit like swedish at school.

Who agrees?

If we had to scale it back to ONE language it would be best to NOT use pretty much the most complex language on earth.

This.

A language like Spanish would work. It's pretty simple. Definitely a lot less confusing than English.

wow just wow ^

I doubt that will ever happen, and it shouldn't. The world is meant for many different styles and cultures. Life would be boring if this happened to disapear.

English is already the most widely spoken language, no one would have problems learning it if they were surrounded by it.

Theres more languages than English and Chinese.
English and French are the two most wide spread languages on Earth, so if the world langauge wasn't English, it would more than likely be French.

Besides, I hear French is easier to learn than English

I enjoy studying different cultures, and that includes language. Language shapes literature for example, so if we were just to have exclusively worldwide English, I'd bet they'd be little to no variation (outside the English language mainstream) in literature as one example. Another point is that culturally, language adopts to the traditions that are specific to the area. I like learning about these things because they're different partly, not because it's the same old shit I see day in and day out.

As said before, English is a really complex language. There are so many things you don't take into account when you speak it, like tenses, phrasing, punctuation and grammar and lots of other little kinks that are there to confuse you. I'm not sure what would be an easier language as I struggle with French and German.

Realistically though, there shouldn't just be one language. It creates diversity between cultures and if we had a one-cultured world, it would be very boring.

Meh, maybe if this would actually be possible. Languages are too deeply rooted in culture, I really don't think people would just up and leave there language. There should be some sort of new universal language to go alongside with all other languages. Esperanto and all other universal intended languages have already failed, but who knows.

It's too late to have one universal language. The closest thing to that is the fact that many non-native English speakers who want to communicate outside their country are trying to learn the language.

You can always mandate that every classroom around the world teaches a new mashed-up language and mandate that when these students become parents, they have to teach their children and so on, but that wouldn't be followed. People aren't interested in anything they're forced to do.

No one said anything about Chinese before you in this thread, so I have no idea how you pulled that out of your ass.

Native English speakers are quite often terrible at grammatical construction. Most have never even encountered formal English. If the world was to switch to one language, why not switch to one that's efficient and easy to learn?

A fact I saw the other day that's quite relevant: There are more English speaking asian people than there are English speaking English people.

Think about it... we have so many accents as it is. Just within' the U.S. itself! If we had to generate it all down into one language, we'd have so many complex accents, too so much depth we wouldn't even understand. At least that's my theory of some sort.

Meh, already done on the internet, since most computer pros know english as a secondary language if not first.

Still, it would be nice to combine languages, question is what is the best one to use?

Well English is the most complex... Maybe we should go back to Latin where there is only like 6 endings for nouns.

No. That's a stupid and very spoilt American ideal.

We already speak 'English' in 3 large countries, and frankly I don't have a damn clue what you guys are talking about a lot of the time.

Variation would continue to occur, culture would be lost, all so some kids don't have to learn an subject that they probably chose to take in the first place.

English definitely has flaws, but it's widely used and practical once you get the hang of it. If not English I would recommend Latin.

Is that sarcasm? Latin has got to be the most sklgjlsjhlksjhljfs language ever. It's 10x harder than it should be. Declensions can go to hell.

What I'm about to say is relevant to that.

People would think that because there are so many Asian English-speakers due to the mandatory English courses in most schools in Asia that it would be best to force English courses in all schools.

But coming from people who teach English in Japan, and from some American foreign-exchange students in Japan, the English curriculum is worthless in terms of helping build English conversational skills, some of the teachers don't even know the language well enough to be teaching it, and a lot of the students don't take in the process, but just memorize the answers because they don't care about how well they do with English but about how well they do in English class.

...Just like almost all 2nd language courses.

Because English is already the most popular language, i think it would be the most logical to switch to that one.

Latin grammar is much more complicated than English grammar, english vocabulary is much more complicated than Latin vocabulary.

That makes sense, but still, I'm only a month in on my first Latin class and its annoying having to memorize 1st, 2nd, 2nd neuter, declensions, so on and so on.

The most popular are Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, and English or Arabic (there's some debate). Arabic, Spanish, and English are spread across the world while Mandarin and Hindi are more in one area.

I think we can all agree that this debate is going to go on for ever. But if the world comes to only having one language, it will happen in a long time from now. And of course it will most likely being English. Not because it is more complex, just because it is most popular within in this world. But that is this world. Going back to Zeroks point on different bubbles that ours.
