I walked, WALKED, 15 miles in the snow to AND from school. Has any of your parents ever given you this speech when you were younger or some variant? God it annoyed me to no end. Yeah yeah, but mom and dad, I'd say, you weren't as stressed as us kids today. You didn't have to worry about pedophiles, texting prices, internet-bullies, sex scndals in schools and a whole bunch of other stuff. Anybody else here have some unfortunate memories, if so what did you asy to them?

Not for me because I already know they had a harder time than I did, especially my dad. Instead of bitching like you are, I try my hardest to make them proud for all their hard work.

My parents forced me to walk everyday to school and back to ensure I wouldn't grow up to be a lazy fatass. It worked, only I'm still lazy.

I went to school in the south before they started air conditioning schools, so everytime I had to write my hand would get stuck to the paper. Worse, once you got a little sweat droplet on the paper, your pencil wouldn't be able to leave a mark, so you'd have all these blank spots in your work.

I also remember when you had to hand copy articles out of an encyclopedia to get your reports turned in, instead of just copy/pasting them off the interent.

I normally never heard anybody say something like that because it sounds like it would only come up if you were complaining about something trivial (aka the as the you don't know how good you have it response). I agree with Dragoonwing's view of this statement, being that you should acknowledge that is very likely that your parents/grandparents had it harder than you.

15 miles? Luxury! Bloody Luxury! In't my day we had to sprint 20 miles t'nearest railway station, find out that union strikes had cancelled all the trains then swim down't canal to get school!

You whipper snappers don't know how easy you've got it!

My grandfather used to do that all the fucking time.

Anything he didn't agree with was countered with a "when I was your age..." or "back in my day..."

then there was no law that forced schools to transport students, so most kids walked once they got old enough to.

You didn't have to worry about pedophiles,

Yes they did, it just wasn't as publicized.

texting prices,

Lose the cellphone and neither will you.

internet-bullies,

You guessed it, get off the internet and there will be no internet bullies

Nothing, the quickest way to shut someone up is to agree with them.

My dad tells me those stories every once in a while. I usually just walk out of the room and go upstairs or something.

The fucked up thing is, sometimes; he keeps telling the story to the air.

Always always respect your parents no matter what. My parents have gone through harsh times and I respect them for that. You obviously don't have asian parents...

Respect what they have done. Sure they didn't have today's stresses but some things were pretty messed up back then. My parents survived a Khmer Rouge Regime genocide and are successful here today in America.

I didn't get the "walked 15 miles in the snow uphill both ways" lecture at any point, at least not seriously... but I did hear quite a bit about how miserable it was for my dad when he went to Catholic parochial school. Ya know, nuns cracking your knuckles with rulers over the slightest things, threatening damnation and hellfire, forcing left-handed kids to write with their right hands, et cetera.

Stuff like that.

My parents have never given me the "in my day..." speech. Thank god, really. Our generation does take a lot for granted, but we also have problems that weren't apparent back in their day. We all have our own problems, but accepting that each generation will have their own problems that you can't possibly understand is just part of life and growing up.
