So I had this conversation with my friend earlier today.

Him: Man, it was crowded yesterday and a black guy just pushed me out of his way.

Me: Wow, what a jerk.

Him: Yeah, then another guy started cursing at me.

Me: Wait...so what was that guy?

Him: White.

Me: Why did you say "black guy" but not say "white guy"?

Him: Because everybody knows that white is the default race.

Me: :|

I dunno. I just kinda think that's annoying.

In America , about 87% of people are white, only 10 % of people are black. So it is more common when you say "a guy" people they think of white, so just to specify they say "a black guy".

It's totally true, too. Only non-white races get pointed out. But since white is an invisible race, they don't really grow up realising they have one.

Because it's America. And most people in America are white, therefore it should be assumed that when somebody doesn't specify a race, you assume the race is white. Like in Mexico Hispanic would be assumed, Asian in Japan, etc.

Depends on the situation.

If I'm trying to point out a white guy in a group of black guys I'll call him the white guy.

It also depends on majority. Being in Africa or Mexico for instance.

In that situation I'd point out both races. But usually if race isn't pointed out, I assume the person is white. Could be because I grew up in a 99.91% caucasian town.

People always imagine a generic term like "guy" to be someone ethnically similar to themselves. It's not racist at all. It's racist if, say, you heard someone say " I saw some guy rob a store" and you assumed the guy was black when you usually assume "guy" to mean just a white person.

Black people won't say "black guy" as much as they do "white guy" (but they probably say "black guy" more than white people say "white guy," if they live in Western society).

In Asia, I'm sure the term "white guy" is common and "asian guy" is nearly nonexistent.

That'd technically be prejudice. Racism implies active discrimination; a behavioural component, whereas prejudice deals more with your thoughts.

I think it varies with location, for example:
"So I was in oakland and I saw this guy" you'll most likely assume he's black.

I totally agree!
Yet on the other hand...I do see why black people get called names and stuff. This isn't for every black person but some of the black guys around my school think there bad ass, just because they are black. I mean i say something to them and they go "are you calling me cause i'm black?" I go "No not at all" and then his minions stand up and they gang up on me.

I made them fuck off in the end but why on earth do black people think they are badass cause they are black???

Makes sense... white people are the majority where I live. It's not a racist thing, just a fact.

If I was in Africa I would probably specify only the white race as the majority of the people are black, thus it's safe to assume that the general term "guy" refers to your average guy... which wold be black. A White guy here would be out of the ordinary and thus worth specifying.

Saying "some black guy pushed me in africa" wouldn't make much sense. It's like saying "Some guy with eyes pushed me".

You would try to define a person by a unique trait... not a common one. A one armed man, a midget, a black guy, etc...
