One of the most toxic substance in the world.

.....But as it turns out, the HFCS industry has been hiding some major skeletons in its closet -- according to the IATP study (pdf), over 30% of products containing the substance tested positive for mercury.

What makes this news truly shocking is not just that the manufacturers of high fructose corn syrup would put consumers' health at risk, but that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knew about the mercury in the syrup, and has been sitting on this information since 2005......

If this is already here I am sorry.

Rule number 1 of Toxicology:

The DOSE, not the substance, makes the poison.

In small enough quantities, anything is edible. In large enough quantities, anything is poisonous.
There's also the small fact that no-one's been reported as getting brain damage (or killed) from eating corn syrup.

Not really, I go shopping at Whole Foods. Or just buy organic things form Publix/Kroger. Only some things have HFCS. See what crappy government we have?

And no, Obama will not make a difference with food.

Dumbass, its in EVERYTHING (excluding organic foods.) and don't come in with your little smart ass telling me that in small quantities... Cause guess what? Since it's in everything you are not getting small quantites anyways!

You just said not really to my post, then right under it said it's exactly what I said previously.

So there's TRACE amounts of mercury MAYBE making it into a MASS-PRODUCED sweetener that's used as ONE INGREDIENT in ALREADY UNHEALTHY foods.

This strikes me just as the earth-shattering news that I shouldn't eat tuna all day every day did: barely important.

Incorrect, mercury is highly poisonous, but has low toxicity. There is a highly toxic derivative of it though called MethylMercury, and it is classified as toxic waste.

Okay so this isn't an argument against the whole concept of consuming HFCS but in fact consuming as it is currently manufactured. So it'll probably take 5 years for the industry to clean up its act and we're back to where we started. Unlike cigarettes and asbestos there's no indication that people are suffering because of this specific contamination so this information in unlikely to change anything. Corporate companies would demand change anyway since its bad for business.

I've probably consumed gallons of high fructose syrup with all the junk and crap that I eat. Am I dead?

Heh, yeah, but isn't DiMethylMercury more rare? MethylMercury I believe is common.

Okay; let's have a proper look at the supposed "evidence" in this (politically motivated) newspaper article you've dug up:
Firstly, there's no sound scientific data to back up the claim that the level of mercury found is harmful. The only thing that even tries to look professional (the IATP study) admits, in it's own words:

"Of course, our survey was just a snapshot in time; we tested only one sample of each product.
That is clearly not sufficient grounds to give definitive advice to consumers on specific products."

They basically admit that they didn't bother doing their own experiment properly enough for it to have any scientific weight to its findings.

Also, the detected mercury was measured in ppt. That's 'parts per TRILLION'. At those concentrations, even heavy metals (which poison brain and other tissues by building up in them) would take years, if not a lifetime, to reach dangerous (or even noticeable) levels in an adult, due to the majority of the mercury simply being flushed out along with all the rest of the waste the human body has spent millions of years evolving to get rid of. A sustained intake of up to 350 ppt is still well below the N.O.E.L (or No Observable Effect Level) for an average person. Even in it's most highly toxic form, dimethyl-mercury, you'd still have to ingest over 2.5 million liters of corn syrup to obtain a fatal dose at 350 ppt.

And let's not forget that, by your own OP (as well as the article), you admitted that only 30% of the things tested showed any sign of mercury. Meaning the other 70% is, by your own evidence, safe for consumption (so it's not in EVERYTHING, is it).

I am curious about one thing though: How many other sources did you read, before coming to your conclusions that (a)this is accurate, and (b)this isn't just another attempt at media scaremongering?
