But on OP, yeah, this is how it seems to work these days. A few years ago was worse, though, when Homer was reduced toa complete Jerkass Idiot. There are more than one episodes where he just starts singing and prancing about for a few minutes while the rest of the family look at him in an odd way. I want to slap whoever came up with those scenes.
Usually stuff like "it used to be better" are just pointless nostalgia, but with Simpsons, it's true. The Movie did save face for them, though.
You've got the exact same point I believe in, The Simpsons did turn HORRIBLE for a few years and now are trying to claw themselves back up again to sustainable, original stories... They've been stumbling, but hey, they're trying a lot harder than they were a few years...
The Simpsons can be seen as a recovering alcoholic really, they just liked to have a few drinks every once in a while during the beginning years with wacky episodes (Bart Gets An Elephant), then they went on a fullon binge, drinking everything in site for a few years (Most of Seasons 10 through 15), now they've joined AA and have started the 12 step program, first having trouble grasping it, but eventually trying to get back to how things were... But things won't ever been the same... (See, Seasons 16 through 20 have been FAIRLY watchable.) The movie was just a build up over 6 years...
