Bands making soundtracks for games?

I mean seriously, when playing a video game whether it be Mario and Zelda or CoD and Halo or Resident evil and Silent Hill or Runescape and WOW wouldn't you much rather have an actual band you know and love make the soundtrack with guitar, drums, etc. instead of a orchestra with like 50 people playing violin and one decent keyboardist/pianoist?
This leads to the question of the thread: If you could make any one band make the entire soundtrack to any one video game would band and game would it be?

I'm not sure about most people, but I prefer the orchestral music. For me, the old classical and orchestral music can evoke more emotion and deepen immersion than some new "flavor-of-the-month" band who had one good song.

Unless you are implying your favorite band only has one good song than that's pretty sad.
Although your opinion is still valid.
I would like to Beyond Twilight do the sound track for a creepy vibed puzzle game.
Or Blind Guardian do the soundtrack for a Zelda game. That would kick ass.

Some games include pop, rock, etc.. and some of the bands are only into one certain genre of songs so you can't really expect a game with all out rock songs. Guitar hero could be a possibility but I don't really care.

I vote for Fuck Buttons to make the next Zelda soundtrack.

Classical music goes hand in hand with Video Games. Even though I have not a single piece of music even close to Classical on my iPod or PC, it still reigns supreme (IMO) over any other genre of soundtrack music even in film.

Something about horror games and death + black metal just go so well together. :D
Although GTA is probably the only game in existance that any rap or hip hop would go well with.

God, I really hope you die in your sleep or at least never get into the video game industry.
This too will pass.

It would be cool... if I could pick the band.
The bigest problem is that not everybody likes the same type of music... so if a bad band is chosen, a lot of people will be put off the game.
For instance, I would never play Half Life if the soundtrack was done by Green Day.... simply because I fucking hate Green Day.
Nobody really has anything against orchstrated music so it's a good medium to use as it can keep everybody happy and still be used to it's full potential to pull out the feel of the game.
Can you imagine Green Day trying to write music that pulls you into the intensity of a gun fight? It would probably fail misserably and seriously hurt the overall fun / feeling of the game.
In other words, it just wouldn't work.

I'd much rather have a professional score, especially if there's supposed to be a feeling of grandeur and expansiveness. The times where bands have worked out that I can recall are NiN doing the Quake soundtrack and the various artists on the Jet Set Radio OST.

id prefer classical music is most games, it enchances the game play so much such as in the halo series, music direction in that game was great. But the only game i would rather have a band playing in for the music would be skater or sports games or racer games, thats really all

It would highly depend on the game's story and setting.
Or Blind Guardian do the soundtrack for a Zelda game. That would kick ass.
As much as that would kickass, I doubt that would ever happen.
I wouldn't say any band per say should make the soundtrack for a game.
But I do think Lead and rhythm guitars do have a place in the soundtrack for certain games.

That wouldn't add quality, it'd just add novelty so it gets bonus points on reviews.
I think a band made the "The Darkness" soundtrack, but I can't remember what it was...the music kicked ass though.

It depends on the game really. I really dont want to hear slipknot while playing the latest survival horror game. Or teeny jap pop music for a COD game just because the budget was cut short and thats all they could do.
