The Origin Of Your Vocabulary 2009-02-09 18:47:50 Reply

I've been thinking recently, and I discovered that most of my vocabulary comes from bizarre situations.
I learned the word 'Fad' from an episode of Ed, Edd and Eddy.
I learned most of my vocabulary, including the way to say phone numbers, from the books "Junie B. Jones"

Where did you get your vocabulary?

Newgrounds' beloved Grammar Nazis have taught me that good grammar and punctuation go a long way. It also makes me look less like a noob.

I was just good with reading and pronunciation and all things about words since junior kindergarten. Of course, I paid attention instead of running around and picking my nose.

The first book I ever read was a book about tying your shoes.
I became an amazing reader.
I didn't learn to tie my shoes until maybe, 6 years later.

Almost all of my vocabulary comes from books. I try to stop the assimilation of vocabulary from people around the school and the internet, it's just too degrading for me to bear.

Really and truly, I rummage through thesauruses just to find better words then the ones I know.

Assuming control.

Haha, strangely, I got alot of vocabulary from Newgrounds. Well, from the more intellectual members anyway. But as a child, I recieved most of my vocabulary from friends and the adults I was often around.

I read a lot so naturally, I have a pretty eloquent vocabulary. At the same time though, I also have kind of a stupid, self-amusing personality so often from my mouth, it'll be eloquent flowing speech juxtaposed with vulgarity.

I used to love Calvin and Hobbes as a kid.

A comic named after two philosophers that uses vocab like "existentialism" = a great comic.

I picked up a lot from the politics forum, Encyclopedia Dramatica, FFXII, and spending too much time on Dictionary.reference.com.

The mix has caused some very unusual speech patterns, but I tend to use only my most scholarly language here, on NewGrounds. IRL, it's a much more unorthodox mix of either spelled-out or phoneticized leet, archaic terms and grammar, and mild sesquipedalianism.
