What's the difference between a machine gun, submachine gun, automatic, and semi-automatic?

Automatic guns keep firing as long as you hold down the trigger (ex. machine gun). Semi-automatics fire once each time you pull the trigger (ex. pistol).

It's an automatic rifle

submachine gun,

Think MP5, it's half way between a rifle and a pistol, and it's fully automatic

automatic,

Hold down the trigger and make swiss cheese

and semi-automatic?

One pull of the trigger makes one bullet come out with a bullet ready for the next pull.

Is a submachine gun the same as a semi-autmatic?

Usually not, though many guns (including subs) have the ability to fire semi-automatically.

A submachine gun would be classified as automatic, not semi-automatic.

What does it mean when a person is such a pacifist that they get shot?

A SMG is a firearm that combines automatic fire with the cartridge of a pistol.

Full auto = keeps shooting until the mag is empty
semi auto = one pull = one shot

Look at this G36 for example
When the fire selector switch is pointed at the 1 white bullet with a cross through it, it is on "safety," and you won't be able to pull the trigger
When it points to the single red bullet, you can shoot a sinlg bullet with the pull of the trigger. This is "semi-Auto"
When it points to the string of 5 bullets, it it on "fully-automatic" and can shoot continuously with as you hold the trigger down

Automatic vs. Semi-Automatic
