i've downloaded a bunch from all diffrent sites, and i've tried loading them onto both the mac vesion and the pc version of flash, but every time i get this error message saying "unexpected file format" the files are .fla format.
what am i doing wrong?

Even if they're both .fla , the mac might be different.

Do you have the older version, or are the sprites the older version?
You shouldn't have any trouble if the sprites are an older version, but if you are using an older version you may have some trouble.
You would need someone to open the files, then 'Save As' an older version. I know Flash CS3 can save to Flash 8, and Flash 8 can go down to Flash MX 2004... you just have to go down the chain :)

you can get a trial of a newer version, but i those are only like 30 days. try adobe.com cuz they have trial versions you can download. or just look for sprites that are saved as an older version. this is all assuming you don't want to pay for a new version.

it cost like $700. of course i don't want to pay for that when i'm contented with the flash i have now. i just need the goddamned sprites.

well, if you need those sprites in particular, i'd just download the trial version of a newer version. and i don't know if this will work, but you might try saving them once you open them in the newer version, but save them as compatible with an older version. probably won't work but, i guess it could.
